Female guests:
French and Saunders (both very clever and funny, each with their own personality).
Tasmin Greig (would really suit the somewhat abstract style QI offers).
Victoria Wood (possibly the finest comedienne ever - why not?)
Lastly, quite a long shot: Emma Watson (being genuinely intelligent, would be interesting to see how she does)

Male guests:
Dylan Moran (QI does well with its grumpy comics - Moran could work just as well)
Richard Ayoade (Another great deadpan character)
Mark Watson (Adorable and very funny)
Ed Byrne (Am really surprised he hasn't already made an appearance)
Last, another long shot: Stewart Lee (don't think it would be his thing, but would love to see him on there)

After watching Stephen's discussion with Craig Ferguson on the 22nd I had to find out more about him. I have always seen him as an actor and after hearing him speak made me seek out more. As a novice im going to read the QI books to start. Keep up the good work and look forward to finding more information and contributing into the community on this site.

Hi there,

I love these hit wonders. This type of music is a hit with youngsters at the moment, as most dancers follow it regularly and everyone is drawn towards the dance floor because of its rhythmic beats. While searching on the Internet for a good collection of songs, I came across a good site i.e. http://www.musicforte.com - they will give you the best club music of contemporary and classic times at your required choice and budget too.

Mandiemouse on "A rant against society"

I am wondering if the rant against society should actually be a rant against the structure that is in place that creates the society. We all function in a patriarchal structure tied into a state-sponsored capitalist viewpoint, and therefore this structure has within it deeply engrained patriarchal views that exemplify only the voices of the western, white, straight, wealthy male. Working within these parameters it could be said that religion is understandably hard pressed to teach anti-violent, peaceful and un-gendered truths.

Further, the religious traditions are deeply penetrated with violent language, thoughts and actions; all of which are over-spirtualised, all of which detract from love and flourishing. These are the narratives, rhetoric and doctrines that have a passion for death, a disregard of the body and earth, and focuses on the soul and ‘other worlds’ as a perfect conclusion to a wretched, painful and undesirable life on earth. This life, therefore, is nothing more than a testing ground where we must all act in a certain way before we can be saved (see Jantzen, 1998; MacFague, 1993; Grey, 1989; to name only a few who discuss this in detail). This is how sexuality is stifled, as the body is evil. (Personally, I think it is an obscenity that we talk about salvation in the next left, while all around there are people who can be saved with almost no effort (food, hygiene). We must start to imagine what flourishing could happen with extreme effort. But this is off topic really)

One way of approaching violence within these parameters (and this includes the violence of stifling sexuality)is through feminist theologies that promote a horizontal nature of authority and exposes the ingrained narratives that disperses hate within the erect structure of patriarchy. Feminist theology reveals the flaws in this hierarchical structure, how it encourages selfishness, violence, abuse and reward for very few ‘winners’.

Humans must be allowed to flourish. Suppressing only leads to metal trauma (and we all know that much devastation always follows from this). Maybe if we can stop asking "where is religion" when bad things happen; instead asking "what can religion do in the face of suppression (and oppression) of human flourishing" we can turn things around ourselves. I would like to give it a go I am sick of waiting for someone else to do it for us.

Eyes were the worst to spot because they are small - but also the first thing a viewer connects with. The eyes are the windows to the soul, it is said, but after I had spotted the clear blue peepers of a six year old, any viewer could be forgiven for detecting cunning or even cruelty in those eyes."
The 100th British Chess Championships take place at the Riviera International Centre in Torquay from Sunday, 28 July until Saturday, 10 August 2013.....so if Stephen would like to pop in we'd be delighted to see him!

...oops - sent too soon. Somehow?

I think Stephen would be familiar with Benson's reference because he's well read (not least on Wilde) and because Benson is almost obligatory reading for the stereotypical, well-read gay man. No, I'm not calling our man 'stereotypical'. Anyway, there you are.

Secondly, I smile with approval at Stephen's cheekiness in rewriting Wodehouse to have Jeeves describe himself as Bertie's 'valet'. Stephen will know that Jeeves would sniffily insist that he was a 'gentleman's gentleman'. I'm sure that Stephen made this change for the sole purpose of pronouncing the final 't' in 'valet'. Good on him. I'd do the same.

Apologies if these observations have long since been canvassed.

itsoff said:
Having only just registered here the observations I want to make (that seem so bright, fresh and apposite to me) may well be very stale and yawn-inducing to all of you old-timers. Still...

First, I've only ever seen Stephen's title, Moab is my Washpot, explained as implying the book as a receptacle for the accumulated grime and time of youth. And, of course, a bloody clever attention-getter. Nothing wrong on either count. It surprises me, nevertheless, that he hasn't acknowledged (if indeed he hasn't) a passing debt to E.F. Benson's comment that for Oscar Wilde "Mayfair was his washpot". Perhaps it's one of those instances which all of us can attest to, of having come across a happy turn of phrase, stored it away for years, in the course of which any provenance is forgotten.

I'm moderately confident that Stephen would have come across the reference because:

Dear Stephen,

the current commander of the International Space Station (ISS), Col. Chris Hadfield, has been very active on facebook and youtube lately, posting all kinds of interesting stuff regarding the adventure of space travel, technology and ordinary life in space. Take a look when you find the time!!! I just thought it might be the kind of thing you find interesting, especially since Col. Hadfield is an absolutely fabulous person and a great inspiration to curious people on earth!

Best Regards!

Upset, first I must say I am so, so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine anything more heartbreaking. I can only guess at the pain you have experienced in losing your precious child.

I just saw the episode you are referring to. I can certainly see this would be a sensitive subject for you. But I am not entirely sure that I agree Stephen was making light of a terribly sad statistic. I got the sense it was a rueful commentary, from someone who knows personal demons all too well. I think any kind of chuckle or laugh you perceived was a sort of nervous reaction, not an attempt at actual humor. We all know there is absolutely nothing funny about suicide.

I will keep you in my prayers, that despite your grief you find some solace and peace as time goes on.

It's great when a thing that has needed cleaning for ages and is really gross suddenly breaks, and then you can get a new thing and not have to clean the old thing. Even better when you can now get a larger thing that is better because things cost less then they did when you got the original thing. Even more wonderful is discovering that the new thing beeps in a much less irritating manner than the old thing. Although I do think all things should come with an an option to never ever beep under any circumstances whatsoever ever at all ever because beeping is fucking annoying. Except smoke alarms, I guess, though in my experience Labradors are better than smoke alarms, as a Labrador has actually saved me from a fire, but all a smoke alarm has ever done is make me fall to the floor, paralysed by the horrible sound, waiting for someone tall to take the battery out so I can continue to cook bacon. My point being, obviously, that we have a new microwave, and it is shiny and nice and doesn't smell like burnt porridge and exploded stir-fry and is big enough that the popcorn packet doesn't get caught on the side and can continue on it's merry journey around and around and around and around and around.... And it's beep is less ear-bleed inducing!

Omg yes! A thousand times yes!

I downloaded the Deluxe Edition from iTunes, LOL.

Not to come across as an unhinged fanatic, lol, but I may have had a top-ten list of songs I was hoping would be on his new album. One of them was 'Shadrack' by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and I could hardly believe it when the TITLE of his new album turned out to be a Sister R. Tharpe song! I like to clean my flat to Tharpe singing 'Didn't It Rain' (it's very bouncy and motivational!)

Did you see his documentary on ITV the other night? I finished work at 9:30, and told my boss, 'I really can't stay back - I have plans to watch Hugh Laurie.' Then on the way home I got accosted by a group of young men, one of whom stripped naked in front of me, and all I could think was - damn you, you naked fiend, you're standing (naked) in between me and Hugh Laurie's documentary!

It was so lovely, the bit with Stephen Fry watching Hugh rehearse on the Queen Mary and all the 'Professor Shiny Scalp' stuff, LOL!

I must admit, I've also become a bit of a Sista Jean McClain groupie, hehe - I now follow her on Twitter and Facebook

And, excitement of all excitements, Hugh and the CB Band are coming to GATESHEAD on their tour! I'm so there

This is so true and I don't see what gives Bingo players the right to be so rude and nasty. After all IT'S JUST A GAME PEOPLE! I hope yourself and your colleague are able to try to ignore the horrible comments and know that you are bigger and better than them and they should count themselves lucky and be grateful to have someone so nice working for their enjoyment and entertainment.
BTW I'd love to see pics of the Queen act - it sounds hilarious!

It's hard not to take it personally when customers are mean, lol, but I seem to be developing a thicker skin day by day. And they seem to have been more subdued since I had my hissy fit, mwahaha! I felt really bad for losing control like that, then I saw Helen Mirren telling off those drummers on the news the other day and I felt much better - I was like - YES! Even Helen Mirren dressed as the Queen loses it sometimes!

I can't really tell what bits of my weirdness are just me, which are because of mental illness, and which are the results of a really weird childhood.

Just wanted to let everyone know (if you didn't already know) that the second album from "Professor Shiny Scalp" was released today!
Mr. Laurie introduced me to Blues music with his first album, Let Them Talk, which completely changed my view of a genre I had previously not even considered listening to. The ITV documentary on Sunday, 'Hugh Laurie - Copper Bottom Blues', showed Hugh's passion for this music and I found his enthusiasm infectious, so I will be buying Didn't It Rain tomorrow!
