It makes sense that it would be linked with a low mood, but which is the cause and which the effect?
I can't really tell what bits of my weirdness are just me, which are because of mental illness, and which are the results of a really weird childhood.

Does anyone know if bipolar is linked to high sensitivity? I am very sensitive to things people say, either to my face or behind my back and stew on them for days on end. I can't sleep, I go over and over what I would like to say in return and I get very upset and angry. Even over little things!

I've always been like this and have never really linked it to the bipolar before, but I'm just wondering what are people's thoughts on this?

To libel is to publish a false statement which is damaging to a person's reputation.

Depression can, as you rightly say, result in death which suggests (to me at least) that current medical procedures are not necessarily effective. Why, then, not have an open mind and at least consider alternatives?

Ok first of all Mr. Fry is not the OP author of this thread. Secondly, opinion is not libel, full stop, so your notion that one should offer up an apology is ridiculous. This is about mental illness, which all too often result in death, and you want us to consider how they earn a living. Spare us the lecture on fairness, and more importantly, refrain from any armchair diagnosis of people on this site.

Although this particular blog is nearly five years old I protest at the injustice done to the 'exploitative' website mentioned.
Mark Tyrrell and Roger Elliot have to earn a living. Just as Stephen Fry, presumably, does not work for nothing.
The person who wrote this angry blog (Mr Fry?) was obviously suffering from depression at the time. Anger is a highly emotional state which overwhelms the reasoning, intelligent part of the brain.
As the clinical depression website makes clear anger is a symptom of depression and the first essential step to 'curing' it is to lower emotional arousal so that learning and a sense of autonomy can come about.
I have no connection with Mark Tyrrell or the website but whoever contributed to this blog should apologise for the libel, for that's what it is - most unfair!

I've spent a long time fighting with, denying and hiding clinical depression, but have recently realised that this isn't even close to being helpful, and so have started talking about it, a lot. I've set up a blog, http://sunnyspellsandscatteredshowers.blogspot.ie/, talking about my experience with depression, and a facebook page by the same name. So far, I'm overwhelmed by the positive reaction that I've gotten, and how willing people are to talk. I really admire Stephen's openness about his struggles with bipolar, and am so familiar with much of what he describes. I think there's a genuine hunger out there to end the stigma around mental health, and the more people that talk the sooner that will happen. Anyone who wants to come and join the conversation over on my blog or page is more than welcome, I'd love to hear from you!

Well, I can't force fish down any more, since a bad case of food poisoning, and I've a fucked-up knee and can't run, so I guess I'm screwed.

The no "ONLY WAY". And the same thing doesn't necessarily work for everyone, and you seem to be insinuating that people who don't get better just aren't trying hard enough.
Everyone is trying.

Like the title says, it's the only way out of any sort of mental illness. I wasted 15 yrs of my life with OCD rituals, depression, etc, the works, and I got better only because I worked HARD at happiness. I eat salmon/mackerel every meal, although fish oil supplements work as well too, and I run nearly 5 miles everyday. If you are serious, you need to try it.

I saw the documentary and I felt an overwhelming urge to pass my experience to others. I hope this helps.

As the topic states, thank you mr. Fry for the work on behalf of psycich illness in general and bipolar condition in detail.

I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder type II for the last two years and though I am painfully aware of most matters in the documentary it was a great relief to have someone else explain the matter to family and close friends.

I´ve tried to start making people more aware of this condition and other psycich illnesses here in Sweden. Unfortunately the common man thinks that psychic illness = axemurderer that hears the voice of god.
Although I´ve yet to find a steady job at the age of 34 I try to follow your example and be open and educate as many as possible.

Once again, thank you mr. Fry
