I take Lithium and Trazadone. Also had citalopram and few other useless general purpose antidepressants.

The lithium works well but does not suit everybody and if you are not compliant it can make things worse.

Also can affect kidney function so must be supervised by local GP as well as mental health team and have regular blood tests.

Long time no speak. The final final version of the charity tribute book for Katy has been sent to publisher's. The contract is being reviewed by her family, a few tweaks then away we go.

Due mainly to my ill health (mental and physical) it has all taken much longer than planned. In the end we recruited 35 contributor's from many area's of Katy's life.

We are all very proud of the final result. I will keep you informed.

Thanks to all those who contributed and/or supported this project.

Great to see some new works on here, maybe we can do another book in the future.

Well i'd guess i should be polite and say hello to everyone. My name is Alistair, although i tend to be known online by my username.

I was diagnosed with severe depression last year, although after going back over events with a counsellor it readily became apparent that i've been suffering from depression for at least 17 years now. I just assumed that everyone else felt like i did, that contemplating suicide at 13,14, 15 etc was just a teenage thing that one did.

What has brought me to this site is a combination of two things really. The first being my profound admiration of Stephen Fry. His documentaries on the subject and his openness about his own bi-polar disorder were instrumental in my finding the strength to carry on. Because afterall if someone as marvellous as Mr. Fry can struggle with the same self loathing and negative thought patterns and suicidal urges, then maybe i wasn't a complete failure for struggling as well.

The second actually occurred today, i rewatched Christopher Hitchins interview with Jeremy Paxman. At the end of the interview he said one of the regrets he had, facing the end of his life, was that he didn't write to people he admired enough and that anyone who had ever considered doing so, should.
So immediately i thought of the people i admired most, and Stephen's name popped into my head so i typed his name into google and ended up here.

And found not only was there a blog to read, but that he'd gone to the effort of having forums set up too.

So here i am.
Er. That introduction ended up far longer than i anticipated, so if you've made it to the bottom of my waffling on, thanks for having the patience.

A couple more updates:

Time To Change: Make a pledge!: Time To Change is an organisation dedicated to ending mental health discrimination & the stigma surrounding mental illness. They are currently running a Time to Talk campaign to encourage people from all walks of life to speak out on mental health issues.

Blood test accurately distinguishes depressed patients from healthy controls: News release from Massachusetts General Hospital

Added a few new articles to my blog over the last couple of days that some might find interesting:

Depression is an illness, not a life choice: Kim Lester from ABC Australia recently posted a story on The Drum about her own experiences with depression & suicidal thoughts.

Vitamin D to fight depression?: Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to depression, according to UT Southwestern Medical Center psychiatrists working with the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study. It is believed to be the largest such investigation ever undertaken.

Excessive gamers more depressed?: Victoria University recently published a report from preliminary studies that seem to show that gamers who average 33 hours a week or more playing may have higher levels of anxiety & depression than those who play less frequently.

Fight Stigma: Stamping Out the Stigma of Mental Illness: Discusses the stigma of mental illness & lists a number of myths associated with mental illness.

Mind Over Matter: A recent press release by the Association of Psychological Science has suggested that what the sufferer thinks of their illness (ANY illness) plays a large roll in determining their health outcomes.

Traumatic experience, silence linked: People who suffer a traumatic experience often don't talk about it, and many forget it over time. "There's this idea, with silence, that if we don't talk about something, it starts fading." says Charles B. Stone of Belgium's Universite Catholique de Louvain, the co-author of a study on the subject.

Facebook: Is this any place for the not-so-self-assured to make friends?: Facebook, the social networking giant that connects 845 million people to one another, may be a jolly gabfest for the self-assured. But for those who suffer from low self-esteem, it appears to be a rather nasty trap, luring such people into self-disclosures that prompt many a Facebook friend to agree with their low opinion of themselves.

Hope someone finds these useful.

Cheers

As they say, it's "where you can learn what’s good, what’s bad, what’s interesting, and what’s plain weird and funny about psychiatric and neurological medications."

That sounds like the usual starting dose, yes. 25mg doesn't really do anything at all, it just introduces your body to the drug. 50mg is where it actually does something.

In about 3 weeks you should know if it's going to have any impact, but you'll only really know after a month or so - just like most drugs, I suppose. The important thing is to keep an eye out for any unwanted side effects after upping the dosage. Skin rashes with Lamotrigine mean an allergy which can turn serious quickly, so if you get anything like that go straight to your GP. Otherwise, just monitor everything carefully & hopefully you'll find things begin to improve!

Hi Et,

Thanks for the response! Im being started out at 25mg for 2 weeks then up to 50mg - does that sound about right? I havent filled it yet....wanted to get some opinions first and read more about it. It does make sense that it would help alleviate my anxiety due to stabilizing my mood swings. Just this morning even I could make a one page list with how frequently - its all over the place - my doc was thinking at least 2-3 weeks to notice anything different.

That makes sense - especially in a mixed phase, where nothing stays constant for very long anyway!

I try to go running (much easier in slightly warmer weather!) & I also cycle to the gym 2-3 times a week. I'd swim too, but I can't. <img src="http://www.stephenfry.com/bb-content/plugins//bb-smilies/default/icon_redface.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

I've stepped it back a little lately, & noticed if I go more than a week with no exercise at all, I feel noticeably lower. It's all quite fascinating...
