I never heard audio CD's from Harry Potter! I am a big Potter fan though and absolutely love the books! Films are not bad either... It would be interesting hearing all those wonderful characters on audio as well.. and as it is Stephen's voice even more so!

So were do i start? I was left at the back of the comprehensive class room in the 80's as i could not read or write too well. I could pick up any musical instrument and play it with in weeks, i could paint, draw with ease and was known as the class "funny man" so to speak (type? you see i struggle with even grammar) . I never really got the hang of it and as some of you may know that in the 80's if you could not do it then you were not on the teachers list of possible brags. I have always had fascination with Stephen Fry as he i always wonder that if i could have written well and could read then he may be what i might have become or could have been. Every time i see him on TV i learn some thing, every time i hear him talk i learn something and once having served in the army i can say that he got his role in Blackadder goes Fourth spot on!. I have not even opened a book since i was 23 (i turned 40 last year) give or take one, or one and on looking around the airport last week for something to keep me company i found his Chronicles. It came with me across Munich, through the Alps, down the valleys of Bavaria, along the Danube river and sat with me in the squares of Salzburg. I would laugh out loud to complete strangers, shreek with amazement on buses and reflect at my own bouts of depression, my smoking addiction and my troubled youth along with a man i greatly admire. I had cancer some years ago aged 30 and ever since i have felt even closer to Stephen , it brought back deep depression and close to suicide. Thanks to a treatment of testosterone i got rid of the darkness and feel better again (this is a new treatment which is making waves that it can be linked to drops and peeks in male hormones) http://www.androids.org.uk by the way . GOING off topic here so i will finish with Thank you for this book it has taught me more in the first 300 pages than the school ever did.I will treasure it for ever.

I can only enjoy Stephen Fry on CD and come late even to that as I am in NZ and we have to wait until the BBC releases things in our country. So when I received English Delight I was probably the last person in the world to listen to it
I heard Sue Mcgregor (of Woman's Hour fame) say that 'Ms' in her passport stood for 'Miss'.
I'm 66 and well remember the fuss 'Ms' made when first introduced but to my recollection it was not another indication of 'Miss' at all. Far from it.

The appellation 'Mrs' was seen as somehow superior to the slightly derogatory 'Miss' with its connotations of spinsterhood and, as someone shudderingly put it 'the inability to catch a man'.
So to avoid this differentiation and the clear prejudice attached to it, 'Ms' was brought in.

This seems to make sense to me, as Ms, for Miss, does not.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Just to say re: Journal of Ordinary Days I know about ree verse; which I suspect came in around 1380
However, looking again I think this poem is a sad immitation of Bridges lengthy Triumph of Beauty: written with 12 syllables to a line and no regard to stress or rhyme-pattern. What a clever girl to know these obscurities! SoI answer my own query it seems, and drop out.

First of all, hi, everyone! How's it going? After browsing around the boards for a little bit, I finally convinced myself to join in on the fun. I love message boards, there are just so many interesting and fun people who post on them.

Anyway, back on track. After watching "A Game of Shadows", I had become a fan of Mr. Fry. When I found out he was an author, I decided to check out some of his work.

I went to Barnes and Noble and found "The Liar" on the shelf and bought it. There was only one copy. And is was the only book by Mr. Fry to be found in fiction. I figured that, because that particular shop was in a mall, that's why they only had that one copy of that one book.

Then, as I went to other Barnes and Noble shops, I noticed the same thing: They only had "The Liar" on the shelves and they only kept one copy of it on display. Sure, at the same time, they had multiple copies of The Fry Chronicles on the biography shelves but I was trying to explore Mr. Fry's fictional work.

Have any other American's run into the same trend? I'm not sure if it's just in my particular area or if several bookshops are the same way but I find it curious that a bookshop would only stock one copy of a book by a certain author on the shelves especially if said author has written other works.

Any thoughts? Sorry if it's a silly question.

Just to say re: Journal of Ordinary Days I know about "free verse", which I suspect came in around 1380 with Wycliffe's Psalms, just before Chaucer's iambs; but that has rythm, stress, rhymes - Eliot for example with a sort of chorus "Hurry up please it's time", or again in Hollow Men: and a seriousness as a communication; or it stands against a bakground of poetic traditiion (look at Eliot's notes). It is not just narrative prose withg neologisms and fancy type. Wouldn't this one have been better as a ballad? "Come listen dear poets come listen to me, A tale of a biro I'll tell,,,"At least an attempt at form would distill the narrative meaning, of which I guess here there isn't much beyond the mushroom words!

I am learning from thus excellent book, or rather basking in its unfolding knowledge. I have come up against my limitations though. I looked at the much-puffed Vahni Capildeo

JOURNAL OF ORDINARY DAYS

I.

Do I look like the sort of person who’s not fit
to go out and buy a pen on her own? The phrase
“May I borrow a biro” is unspeakable
for its vocalic ugliness. The task in hand,
this third daze of work, is dis- and rearranging,
suspecting, assessing, keying in and tagging
all the historical spellings of the verb QUIT.
“That can’t be a lot? QUIT is such a little verb?”
But people have been quitting for centuries, and
especially in Scotland, all in different ways.
So this third daze I break from work to buy a pen.
Let it be an ethical biro. I set out
for the fair trade Quaker shop. The assistants talk
more than I do, showing me pens two fingers thick
encrusted like scary rhinestoneri charging
pink-purple, delivering jabs in the eye
to mass-produced-capitalist-consumerist-
conformity. But not suitable to be housed
in the zoo of QUIT. Sorry, silent, cash intact,
I look elsewhere, and not far off the ordinary
rewards this initiative: sell-it-all, old-fashioned,
like nineteen fifty-three. nearly customer-free,
a newsagent of the English variety.
The cardboard cradles for goods on these shelves wouldn’t
aspire to store shoes, let alone to be reborn
as cut-out stars for a wonky schoolhouse mobile.
With reverence for age, I abstract a biro
not quite dried up. I softfoot over to the queue.
So form a line of one, outnumbered by cashiers.
The older assistant keeps things under control.
But can’t seem to stop his helper singing singing
Singing to him lovingly in a high-pitched tone,
“I’m going to put you in chains and take you home.
I’m going to put you in chains and take you home.”
Neither raises his voice; nor does the one quiet down.
In a queue of one I shall queue, change in hand, wait,
queue in a queue of one, however long it takes.
Anything is better than going back to QUIT.
I can buy a pen on my own. I’m fit.

I thought anapaests, truncated etc , some iambs, but really can't make much sense of it metrically.

One critic writes "Much of her poetry reads like prose, which in fact it is" and another comment is her inability to escape her solipsism.
Can anyone help please? If not, is it worth publishing as poetry rather than autobiographical snapshota ?

We have a signed copy of The Fry Chronicles donated by Stephen Fry in support of our one-off charity online auction.

We are holding an eBay auction, and all proceeds will go to EachStep Blackley, a pioneering new specialist dementia care service in Manchester that supports people with the condition from diagnosis until the end of their lives (www.each-step.co.uk). The money will go towards EachStep Blackley employing a specialist coordinator for ‘Singing for the Brain’, a musical therapy that helps people with dementia to socialise, relax and unlock memories through song. EachStep Blackley is part of national social care charity Community Integrated Care – http://www.c-i-c.co.uk.

And I just really need to say publicly that academic institutions supposedly enlightened cannot see the gold coin before them - that is me. Oi.
