I was half way through reading The Fry Chronicles when I discovered this website and I just had to post something. This is definitely one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. It was a sentimental journey through the eighties, my childhood years when the world was much simpler - no IPods, Acrobat Readers, Sticky Threads, Tweets, when 'wireless' meant radio (I sound like one of those grumpy old women! :))... I also marvelled at the wonders of the BBC B computer. As a child my mother had taken me to see one of the very tirst computers which was a whole room full of equipment and now it could fit into my bedroom and I could play Donkey Kong and who knows what downloaded on that little cassette player. I could type things out... in different colours... and even have the words flashing on the screen!! It is wonderful now to be able to join fellow fans in a virtual community, especially as most of the year I live in a country where Stephen Fry is less well known (returning to my beloved Norfolk in the summer) and I want to share my enthusiasm about this wonderful person who has a special place in my heart. In the words of Morecambe and Wise - Stephen, you bring me sunshine, bring me laughter, bring me love...

Yes, I also find it totally baffling that people do not have libraries in their homes. I think it is every parent's responsibility to ensure the cornerstone of parenting be to surround children with books, music and art. I am pleased to say that all my children are into music and books. Shakespeare is some my daughter's favourite reading.

Well, as far as I’m concerned, this article doesn’t deny any of the crimes committed by the Palestinian people. The only thing it says is that Israel isn’t following the human rights law, which is entirely true.

A third volume was alluded to at the end of Chronicles, but given Stephen’s workload, we should not expect it anytime soon. In fact, it would not be unreasonable for it to appear as late as the autumn of 2023, if the gap between Moab and Chronicles is anything to go by.

We're not celebrating Israel's anniversary

reddit this The Guardian, Wednesday 30 April 2008 Article history In May, Jewish organisations will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel. This is understandable in the context of centuries of persecution culminating in the Holocaust. Nevertheless, we are Jews who will not be celebrating. Surely it is now time to acknowledge the narrative of the other, the price paid by another people for European anti-semitism and Hitler's genocidal policies. As Edward Said emphasised, what the Holocaust is to the Jews, the Naqba is to the Palestinians.

In April 1948, the same month as the infamous massacre at Deir Yassin and the mortar attack on Palestinian civilians in Haifa's market square, Plan Dalet was put into operation. This authorised the destruction of Palestinian villages and the expulsion of the indigenous population outside the borders of the state. We will not be celebrating.

In July 1948, 70,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes in Lydda and Ramleh in the heat of the summer with no food or water. Hundreds died. It was known as the Death March. We will not be celebrating.

In all, 750,000 Palestinians became refugees. Some 400 villages were wiped off the map. That did not end the ethnic cleansing. Thousands of Palestinians (Israeli citizens) were expelled from the Galilee in 1956. Many thousands more when Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza. Under international law and sanctioned by UN resolution 194, refugees from war have a right to return or compensation. Israel has never accepted that right. We will not be celebrating.

We cannot celebrate the birthday of a state founded on terrorism, massacres and the dispossession of another people from their land. We cannot celebrate the birthday of a state that even now engages in ethnic cleansing, that violates international law, that is inflicting a monstrous collective punishment on the civilian population of Gaza and that continues to deny to Palestinians their human rights and national aspirations.

We will celebrate when Arab and Jew live as equals in a peaceful Middle East.

I have read lots of books and found them to be interesting. but Steven fry as won me over by is charm and skill. I would compare his writing to that of late Charles dickens or to a musical masterpiece. after reading his autobiography I was tempted to read more so pick Moab is my washpot, that will become my favorite book for a long time and just ordered more can't get enough of this charming graceful man. I like his intelligence his humor and frankness. the most thing that appeals to me is his bravery I don't think that I have ever been brave like this and I want to.
I liked moab is my washpot, because it speaks to me a lot and helps me to deal with issues in my own life.how free I feel when reading it.but really i believe Steven fry as opened a new door to me in the reading world and I seam to love it more and want to read more i also love is books because of the good grammar and English, I think i would be able to write better too as I read.can't wait.I already have a great passion for learning, but not very good writing skills.I wish that he would write something for the adult that's learning in English and maths, I am so desperate to learn .

Hi Henry, thank you very much for sharing the story of your meeting with Stephen with us.

Stephen Fry's visit to Holland was on Dutch TV yesterday: http://nieuwsuur.nl/video/252613-stephen-fry-over-stephen-fry.html
One of the things he talks about is that the behavior of fans has changed. They used to make a little chat with you, he says, while I signed the books But now they all have camera's, they come and stand behind the table and they all want a picture with their arms around me to put on Facebook.
BTW After the short Dutch introduction you expect Stephen to speak English, but actually he talks the first few lines in Dutch too! He is so funny and knows exactly how to please his audience.
There are lots of fragments where he speaks English and I'm sure you will enjoy listen to it.

So, I went to The Hague yesterday and saw Stephen Fry in the theater there. He made a speech and an artist talk about his book The Fry Chronicles. It was superb! He is such an entertainer. The crowd was enormous, sold out completely - and the applause as he came up...! He clearly enjoyed it.

Later I stood in queue to buy a book and let him sign it. It took quite a while, but was worthwhile the effort. He was so friendly and although he must have heard my 'I very much enjoyed the show' line a hundred times that evening, he looked very intensively at me and said 'O really? I'm so glad you enjoyed it, we enjoyed it too. Thank you so much for coming'. I'm sure he repeated that line over and over again that night, but it was the effort he took to make it sound as genuine as possible that made me very grateful I'd come. As it was my first day out after my father's death, I treasure it even more.

I made a few little vids, but I hesitate to put them on you tube as I don't know if this would be allowed. I would love to share them though, as there is this hilarious anecdote of him visiting a Bulgarian hypnotherapist who tried to cure him from his fear of singing. <img src="http://www.stephenfry.com/bb-content/plugins//bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />
