BTW, someone asked about Fry's nude scene and I think Guy Ritchie said it was totally Mr.Fry's decision and I think he indicates that himself.

Please, please, please, please bribe whoever at the BBC needs bribing and get this fabulous series released for home viewing. What "Yes, Minister" was for the 80s, and "House of Cards" was for the 90s, "Absolute Power" was for the 00s ... but not yet in my home collection.

Or, are we waiting for 3-D Blu-Ray?

I enjoyed reading your perspective because it's honest <img src="http://www.stephenfry.com/bb-content/plugins//bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

I haven't seen it myself but plan to. I did see a clip of Mr.Fry's Mycroft character and liked it. He tells Sherlock that Watson's not as slow as Sherlock had led him to believe <img src="http://www.stephenfry.com/bb-content/plugins//bb-smilies/default/icon_lol.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" /> Poor Watson...poor, poor Watson.

I watched the most recent episode of the BBC Sherlock and was kind of disappointed for generally similar reasons ( plot holes or dull ). Still, I'm glad they both exist <img src="http://www.stephenfry.com/bb-content/plugins//bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

As someone who's actually served in a war, not stateside mind you, not as an armchair general or even a historian, I can tell you right now that details DO matter. Why?

Because it's the TRUTH. And the truth is ugly sometimes. Horrific.

How would you feel if someone suggested covering up the ugly details of the Auschwitz camp because an audience might find it 'uncomftorable'?

How about slavery and the whip and the hot sun and the blood and the families torn apart? Such images do, and SHOULD, make people uncomftorable.

On this day, MLK's day, do you have any idea how horrified HE might be to realize that there are many black youths now who have no clue whatsoever about what went down in Detroit or Watts in the '60's? Or the worship of thuggery over peace? Do you think he would ignore it because the topic might make peopel 'uncomftorable'?

The winds of facism have been blowing at the top for a while now, and are coming down into the valley where most of us live every day. From telling people what they can do with their bodies to continuing the exploitation of children's sexuality before they even understand what it is, to the 'illegal immigrant' as the new boogeyman of our age, to pretending that everybody is nice, and evolved, and well groomed and interested in shiny things alone, and who wish and demand silence that pretends there is no ugliness that can go on behind them to build them...this is a poisonous wind, billowing like a drop of ink in still water.

Sanitized versions of the truth might be fine for comedy and romance, but even for historical fiction are going too far, imo.

Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows was not what I hoped it would be, despite some good actors including our lovely Mister Fry. Trite and rather dull for the first hour and a half, anti-climactic in its denouement (which is unforgivable given the storyline they were drawing from!) and lacking in even a scrap of intrigue throughout.

I think too much time was spent on explosions and spectacle, and not enough on a mystery plot that captured the attention. The two leads seemed to have turned off their considerable acting acumen for the duration of the film and bored me half to death. Kelly Reilly was her usual intolerable self as Watson's deadly-dull and irritating wife. Sim seemed to be there merely to show a bit of cleavage and perpetuate stereotypes about gypsies.

Mycroft could have been more interesting but they wasted Mr. Fry on cheap gags and...er...yeah, more cheap gags. The character is really interesting in the books - and very much a match for Holmes. I was hoping there would be an opportunity for Mycroft to show this, rather than just bumbling about in the buff.

Not one convincing moment in the whole film. All in all, a mortifying disappointment.

I just went to see the new Sherlock Holmes film last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but since I hadn't seen many ads for it it came as a complete surprise to see mr Fry playing Mycroft.

What an utter delight!

I'm afraid I made a bit of a fool of myself going "Awww" when he first came on, which no one else in the theatre did. (It was a small theatre, and everyone in it was a philistine. Except my date.)

And this on the very same day that I finished reading Moab Is My Washpot, which I'd bought for myself as a Christmas treat. How's that for a koinkydink?

The excellent choice for the part and the wonderful performance aside, I always had a bit of a soft spot for Mycroft - I just loved the idea of clever Sherlock having an even cleverer brother - so I hope we get to see more Mycroft in movies to come.

Gustav said:
Then again, you wouldn't recognise Nazism as 'okay' because Hitler created jobs in Germany, would you?

The fundamental ideas of every variation of the church have since day one mainly been about genocide, oppression, unequal values, tyranni and so on. Considering the consequences of the church has mostly been seen through these different values as well, I really can't see the good side of it.

Because they have good PR.

They have also saved Italy from the Huns.

Pope John Paul saved thousands of Jews, and was a firm enemy of Nazism and Communism. He helped end the Soviet Union.

Even Pius saved thousands of Jews during WW2.

He sheltered many in his Palace, and the Church helped save many Jews in Rome and throughout Europe.

He was hardly Hitler's Pope.

The Vatican also tried to stop the horror of WW1.
