...oops - sent too soon. Somehow?

I think Stephen would be familiar with Benson's reference because he's well read (not least on Wilde) and because Benson is almost obligatory reading for the stereotypical, well-read gay man. No, I'm not calling our man 'stereotypical'. Anyway, there you are.

Secondly, I smile with approval at Stephen's cheekiness in rewriting Wodehouse to have Jeeves describe himself as Bertie's 'valet'. Stephen will know that Jeeves would sniffily insist that he was a 'gentleman's gentleman'. I'm sure that Stephen made this change for the sole purpose of pronouncing the final 't' in 'valet'. Good on him. I'd do the same.

Apologies if these observations have long since been canvassed.

itsoff said:
Having only just registered here the observations I want to make (that seem so bright, fresh and apposite to me) may well be very stale and yawn-inducing to all of you old-timers. Still...

First, I've only ever seen Stephen's title, Moab is my Washpot, explained as implying the book as a receptacle for the accumulated grime and time of youth. And, of course, a bloody clever attention-getter. Nothing wrong on either count. It surprises me, nevertheless, that he hasn't acknowledged (if indeed he hasn't) a passing debt to E.F. Benson's comment that for Oscar Wilde "Mayfair was his washpot". Perhaps it's one of those instances which all of us can attest to, of having come across a happy turn of phrase, stored it away for years, in the course of which any provenance is forgotten.

I'm moderately confident that Stephen would have come across the reference because:

Dear Stephen,

the current commander of the International Space Station (ISS), Col. Chris Hadfield, has been very active on facebook and youtube lately, posting all kinds of interesting stuff regarding the adventure of space travel, technology and ordinary life in space. Take a look when you find the time!!! I just thought it might be the kind of thing you find interesting, especially since Col. Hadfield is an absolutely fabulous person and a great inspiration to curious people on earth!

Best Regards!

I know this will be controversial, and some may say in bad taste, but for the sake of integrity, I need to say ;

"Ding Dong the witch is dead!"

Believing you are right, and making people do what you believe, doesn't make you right.

And to those who defend her, I cite the popular continuing support of Slobodan Milosovich by those who benefited from his "radical" actions and policies.

There will always be many who profit from the impoverishment and diminition of others.

But because you got ahead through what she did is no evidence that she was right or good.

The best that can be said is that she absolutely believed that anything she thought and did was right and for the best.

But the same can be said of the Austro-Bavarian Housepainter!

In controvention of that spirit, I am happy to have the owner of this post remove it and I will apologise if it is judged to be inappropriate.

"Each one kills the one he loves and so he has to die" ( Ballard of Reading Gaol)

Initially and at the height of fame and creativity, both Wilde and Rimbaud could be said to have loved themselves more than others they loved.....both of them inadvertantly killed the self-image of themselves they loved, through self-indulgance, and then went on to punish themselves for so-doing, by going into obscurity and early death.

If (Nitro)we ponder about Wilde's privilige ( from having access to higher society) and advocacy for the poor; then on his choices of rentboys and their ages etc; I find it useful to compare and contrast with the life of Arthur Rimbaud, in to define/separate the exploiter and the exploitee, and whether Rimbauds self-effected professional assination would have been Wilde's eventual end had not Queensbury got there first?

Hi Steven and everyone, im also new to this whole blog thing but also suffer form mental ill health. I know it sounds really lame but you actually help me so much on a daily basis just through giving me hope that there is life beyond mental illness. I have had anorexia nervosa since the age of 11 and am now 23, still in recovery and having bene in and out of hopsitals, mental health units and the joy of sections and all that jazz, im at the stage were im opting to tackle the lats lap myself-head on, with the intention of making my illness work for me instead of the other way around. It sounds really stalkerish but when im freaking out or having those moments when im in danger of wallowing in a pool of self pity or caving into my anxiety i try and think "what would steven do"..so thank you for helping me through the dark days!I am also of course a huge fan of your work and found the documentarys on HIV, Bipolar and Vagner particularly interesting and have real every one of your novels which very much tickle my pickle! So again-thank you for the endless entertainment and also the QI episode which taught me that sperm whales have a 9 meter long penis (something i think everyone should know).
As for everyone else in this forum i feel really strongly about raising awareness and fighting stigma for mental health and am currently doing allot of campaigning for eating disorder services in Wales, however if anyone needs any help or support with anything please let me know, im happy to help

Raised a Jehovah's Witness, but just couldn't continue as a fundamentalist Christian (which is what JWs are, though they would deny it) anymore. Faded out of the community about 6 years ago. Couldn't officially step out of it for fear of being disfellowshipped, thus losing all contact with some of my closest relatives. Religion serves its purpose for some - people invented it for a reason - but those that wish to live or think otherwise should be left alone. Still, it's been tough living outside that close-knit community - there is no replacement.

I dislike fundamentalist thought in any religion. I'm glad they believe strongly but they have no jurisdiction to tell me what and how I should go about believing in something. I'm Catholic, that will not change especially now. That is that.

Dear Stephen,

I am writing as I do not know if you realise that bipolar UK is having a serious funding crisis & may have to close. As 65,000 sufferers were helped last year, this would indeed be a grave pity. I suffer from bp1 & I've found their services, since diagnosis invaluable.
Many thanks for all your good work.

I don't know if you get around to reading any of this but I will comment anyway. I don't belong to any other "clubs". But I am a big fan of yours. I was surprised to learn that you are bipolar but I am sure that is one of the reasons I like you so much. I am bipolar 2. Bipolar people have to have a good sense of humor to survive. They also must not take themselves too seriously. You qualify on both counts.
I loved Kingdom and watch for other shows with you in them. I want to purchase your biography. I hope you have a long and varied career.

Hello Stephen
Understand the sports thing. Imagine landing in Australia in the 50s as a 10 pound pom with no hand-eye coordination and unable to swim. Anyway, survived all that. We all know about the tech-entrepreneurs of the 80s and 90s, but your Dad was making what looked like a handsome living being an independent supplier of high-tech gizmos to conservative behemoths such as ICI in the 50s. He must have been doing it even earlier. I would be very interested to know how he got into this activity much earlier it seems than most others, and how he maintained such an apparently successful enterprise. Cheers, Ian
