There is also an accredited system in UK that police, ambulance and fire services use called ICE = In Case of Emergency...

Put a number in your phone of someone you would want contacting in case of emergency and the helpers will look for this number on your phone under ICE in your phone book and use it to contact who ever you put - could be a specialised doctor or a social worker or relative etc. It works for example when some one has fallen unconscious or something like that - so look in the phone under ICE in case of emergency.

This is a fantastic idea, I have used it for a long time, though thankfully never needed it yet. I have 3: one is labelled 'MH Crisis', the other 2 are just 'ICE 1' and 'ICE 2'.

It is acceptable (and, actually, recommended) that you have 'ICE 1' and 'ICE 2' in case your first contact is unreachable.

It is important to clarify that you shouldn't just think 'well, surely they'll ring my mum, and shes already in my contacts.' Do not expect the emergency services to go flicking through your contacts looking for 'Mum' in an emergency - if they don't find 'ICE' they'll wait till you've been admitted to hospital or whatever before trying to contact someone through your medical records (your safety is their priority!)

there are a lot of stickies on this board, but this one should be stickied way at the top, and can it have a bright BLINKING ARROW that says WE LOVE YOU ?

(when i don't feel good, i have a very hard time reading lots of black and white text and wading through long lists on forums. it's like i can't see. but hey maybe no one else is like this!)

NUMBERS FOR THE US:

eternal students is right.
i also have

national suicide prevention lifeline
1-800-273-8255

trever help
is specifically staffed with people who understand questions of GLBT people
1-800-850-8078

WORLDWIDE:
you can find lifelines from every country at http://www.befrienders.org (worldwide spinoff of the uk's samaritans)

also has USA numbers for specific states.

you can email samaritans at jo@samaritans.org
since it is based in UK, people elsewhere: understand you may not recieve an email response for 12 or 24 hours.

ONE ADDL USA NUMBER:
Many states in US have started a 2-1-1 service. The purpose is to find a person help in many social service areas. I haven't used it but it may be a way to find clinics or counseling services for anyone who is uninsured, underinsured. (what, all of us?) i think you just dial 2-1-1

a good idea is to get a card for your billfold, write your numbers on it, put numbers in your cell phone. also on the card, write names and numbers of friends who are good to call (sometimes it's not your closest friend...but a person who has a listening talent.) also write down activities that usually calm you. when upset and overwhelmed it's easy to forget all the possibilities of people and activities that will help. KEEP IT in your billfold (or whatever is always with you, in any private way you can) even while you feel fine. then you will know you always have something to reach for.

This is really intended as being a list of where people can seek help if they need to talk to someone and they need face to face contact as soon as possible. A forum can only go so far. These places have trained operators who can help when you feel like that's it, there is no more, you can't keep going.
