Absolutely!!

Well said there!

To all those who think like Francis Fukyama, that history is over, think again. It's only just getting started.

We are really on the cusp of super and concious human developement!

This will come with greater democracy, in the work place, in the estates and in the home!

Yes, I must admit South America gives me room to hope. The PM of Chile is another intelligent leftie: a woman whose Dad was murdered by the fascists, and she herself was tortured. That's one good thing about the Iraq war - Bush and Co are too busy suffering the consequences of their ill-advised invasion to interfere in South America. And maybe, even, they've learnt their lesson that you CANNOT impose US values on those who don't like 'em.

T'wood make sense "Bofinbabe"!

Youth are very mis-and-underepresented in the media. Quite criminaly so!

If anyone is treated like this by the press/tv etc I always want to know why!

Venezuela for instance. How many of us know exactly what is going on out there, but our "unbiased" BBC dont mention it. A govt that is taking the oil wealth of the country and ploughing it into house building and better food distribution and education and free health care for the poorer sections in society! Great we hear ourselves say, but niether the American nor UK govts want us to hear this.

Why? Coz if they can do it, i.e. the Venezuelan's, then why cant we?

Hi Joan. For me music represents a reflection of of things happening in society! The progressive movements in the sixties threw up new musical forms, experimentation and brave attempts to challenge the existing order of things. This took place at every level, in theatre, comedy, TV and finaly in politics with the near election of Tony Benn as leader of the Labour party. Politics always lags behind the conciousness of the mass of people.

Yes the world turned and the right have dominated the political scene since, but the world will turn again and new interpretations of socialist ideas will spring forward. Look toward Venezuela at present to see the Latin American manifestation of this process. The western world is preparing for a big swing leftward and there is nothing the Bushes and Blair's can do about it!

It's in the music see! Many youth are beggining to embrace more experimental and rock based forms which, although not as inovative as the sixties styles, are never the less an expression of a desire to reject the stuff you talked about and move toward more organic and live social forms of music!

The hoody/ chav tag the the media give our young people I am sure is a concious policy to sow division and foster suspicions and hate toward the youth thus taking them out of the political arena and rendering them neutered and disenfranchised from the main stream.

The young are then depicted as either drug fuled thieves and muggers or not refered to at all which leaves everyone with only one impression of young people.

Our youth are intelligent and resourceful and capable of doing anything successive generations have done and probably more, but the politicians dont want them becoming politicaly organised.

The Labour Party closed down it's youth section in the early ninties which is a fore runner to this tactic of keeping the youth politicaly at bay!

Music allows the youth to express thier ideas but this will eventual find it's way into the mainstream and once again the existing order will be challenged and hopefully changed for good!

I don't think the 60s and early 70s music has ever been beaten, to tell the truth. 50s stuff was boring - all that establishment stuff, and Frank Sinatra and Doris Day. Then along came the Beatles, the Mersey sound, The Stones.....I remember it clearly; it was as if someone had turned the lights on. I was walking down the stairs thinking about school one morning, when the radio DJ said "As one Beatle said to another....." then he played their first hit. 'Love me Do'. Everything changed in England after that.
It was round about then when we all started protesting what the establishment was doing: we went on the CND marches, took anti-fox hunting action etc. I loved the hunt saboteurs; I used to go hiking and cycling in the Yorkshire Dales with my mates, and whenever we had a chance we'd help the saboteurs by sticking up misleading hunt info in the villages we passed through, or whatever else we could do.
In the USA the civil rights movement was gaining momentum, Dr. King was still alive and drivinging the rednecks and racists insane. We thought we were at the start of a new Enlightenment. Ha.
Along came Thatcher and Reagan and, well, you know the rest. And what do we get for 'music' now? Bloody stupid, ugly, Rap, or sound-engineered meandering whinge music a la Whitney Houston. Grrrrrr.

Being an old lover of rock n' stuff I must just draw everyones attention toward a song called "Time stand still" by a beautiful band called Rush. From thier Hold Your Fire album, the song is about kind of slowing down and stopping for a while, just to appreciate the things we sometimes take for granted such as friends and family.

Didn't think a classic rock band could sing about such stuff didja?

Check it out, get a download! Listen to it's sheer beauty!

Copacabana by Barry Manilow (:-// sorry, late 70s teenager) - accompanied by some dancercising X-D

I love that song too, and I'm not ashamed to admit it!!!!! There is actually a place called Copacabana in Bolivia -- it's the wedding hotspot of the country, everyone goes there to get hitched -- but when I was there all I could think of was that crazy song!

I also love "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" by Bakara.

But then, I also love Nick Cave. Whatever... <img src="http://www.stephenfry.com/bb-content/plugins//bb-smilies/default/icon_eek.gif" title="8-O" class="bb_smilies" />
