People who imagine their words in print tend to get it right. Others can be lazy, or mundfaul (lazy mouths) as the Germans call us. Little children learning to speak often find difficulties in double or treble consonants. I remember my little lad calling a spider a 'pider' and a snake a nake (actually it sounded like nike 'cos we are in Australia)

Perhaps that's the answer - they haven't grown up, linguistically.

I listened with interest to your programme this morning surrounding the letter X. ( Very Interesting )
What a pity you did not bring up or even skirt around the abuse of this letter and its mis-pronunciation largely from a number of BBC connected individuals. such mis-pronuciation surrounds the word 'Six'
or 'Sixth' which are frequently pronounced as 'Sic' 'Sick' or
'Sith' for no apparrent reason. Many of the abusers used to pronounce these words properly but have recently stopped doing so. I cannot get an explanation from the BBC. They would not pronounce the word . 'Sex' as 'Seck' nor 'Flex' as 'Fleck' etc. so why is it happening ?
