I am a big fan of Stephen Fry and his novels, so I was quite surprised to see a continuity error in The Stars' Tennis Balls. It comes in the opening chapter.

How can Ned's mum have darned his socks, if she died while giving birth to him?

Quotes:
"When my mum was alive she genuinely used to darn socks for me, like some old Victorian."

Then a few paras later:

"My mother died when I was born."

At first I thought it had something to do with the plot and that Ned was an unreliable narrator, but it doesn't appear to be the case, unless I'm missing something.

This has probably been covered before, but I'm new to the site.

Thanks.

Parallel universe ?

The only way is forward. Now where's the bar?

Of course! I knew there must be a logical answer. Never question the Fry.
