Personal rant warning: we've had the thread that started off about texting and driving and it then went off in a different direction. This one is inspired by a deep and heartfelt personal desire (later dear, later) to eradicate one source of dangerous driving.

Macho "your-car-is-a-supercar-ignore -laws-and-limits-and-decent-behaviour" advertising.

We get it here, what's it like where you are? Ads on the box showing cars being driven at high speed on narrow roads, public highways being used like personal racetracks, ads that show safety features that magically get stupid drivers out of what should be perfectly avoidable trouble in the first place, ads that tell the punters that the new Snottathon tyre will last for a million miles and grip the road like a pitbull's jaws on a steak. Ads like Nissan's 4wd pickup that shows a black car rumbling into a small town, and the locals hiding in fear of the dork inside it, the motto of the ad being "Nissan, it gets respect". No, it gets people frightened of thugs.

My personal rant is this: rid the world of the curse of sporting macho aggression in car advertising. It's not a *kin racetrack out there, it's not impossible to go through life without a machine that thinks for you, and it's not impossible to go through life without an unpleasant attitude to everyone else on the road.

The only way is forward. Now where's the bar?

The ads here seem to focus on safety and style, not necessarily at the same time. When some driver is going down the road in TV ads, there is no other traffic. Anything advertised to get people out of tricky situations is usually focused on cars that are broken down, usually including a mom with several kids.

I've never noticed car ads being aggressive here. They usually pimp cars using good-looking people, but that's as far as it goes. Years ago, it was different. I still remember Pontiac's ads "We build excitement - Pontiac!" These were accompanied by fast-driving young men.

Truck ads are something else entirely. Those are presented as being for macho men who do heavy physical work. But they still don't seem aggressive to me.

That's true, there's a lot of focus on how many airbags, crash test and safety ratings etc., and doesn't it seem like there's at least one auto insurance ad for every car ad? Many of the car ads here also focus on comparisons with other auto makers, for example Ford (found on road dead), always compares it's cars and trucks with Chevy etc. Most of the pickup truck ads I see are usually about payload, towing capacity and durability.

I'd say most German adverts have their focus on 'male' focuses like sportiness as well as safety, mileage, eco-friendliness and design. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G-YTi1-gTQ&NR=1

Some simply aim for originality. Example:

As an inhabitant of this forum, I do call into question the state of mind of this advert's producers and the Audi sales staff.

Does it mean it's also wrong for me to keep a black widow in my sewing kit?
