Dear Stephen and Readers. I have just watched the second part of the documentry of Stephen and Biopolar with interest. I have not had the condition myself, but have friends who have, and have been seriously ill with depression so have empathy with those who have. I was particularly intersted in what the female GP had to say regarding what food we eat and the inpact it has on our well being. A brief description of my own experience of being diagnosed with 'Stress' was one of feeling of being 'in sane', rocking and not knowing who or if I had spoken to anyone during the day. Along with violent anger and panic attacks. I didn't tell my GP of the seriousness of how I felt for fear of being sectioned, I mearly used him for sick notes for work. I treat myself with the help of a Chinese Doctor with herbs and accupunture, Colour Light treatment other heabal remedies. Since I started recovering many months later, I began my own research into alternaive treatments. I agree with the female GP in her outlook regarding diet. Omega oils in oily fish and flax seed are an important brain food, but it is important to note that we need omega 3 6 9 oils for them to be properly asorbed into the body as well as magnesium. In Chinese traditional medicine stress of the liver causes an unhealthy mind, hence variations in mood. So therfore liver detox can also help with the condition. Legums such as sprouted lentles, chick peas etc, can also detox the liver. Life style also helps, I used to walk on a daily basis around woodland, and often eat my breakfast there. When having anger attacts I would beat up my bed. I found all this to be beneficial to my condition. I too refused prescribed toxic medication. I still take herbal suppliments and other everyday common foods to aid in my well being and am pleased that I chose not to poison my body as science would believe is the right choice. I am stable now, and have since descovered hidden talents, that lay dormant for decades. This may not be the path for some people, and with out going into too much detail, hope I may inspire others to do similar journeys.
Thanks for reading
Bren

If it works for you then fine, though i'd rather you did NOT encourage others to copy you Bren. People should know: A cod liver oil tab or flaxeed oil tab if you are vegi is a good idea as a daily supplement though it will take months to have an effect. This is to get extra omega 3 fatty acids (brain food). You get enough of the others in your diet. Also, deficiencies in the following vitamins can cause depression: B1, B3, B5, B6, B12, Folic acid, Vitamin C. Also the following minerals: Zinc, Iron, Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium and Manganese. A good diet or if that's not possible a good multi-vitamin and mineral tablet might help you. KSx I am an administrator on this site. "Having a great intellect is no path to being happy." Totally agree with you KS - as always My oncologist and pdoc told me to concentrate on getting back to a healthy balanced diet i.e. stopping the sickness so that could happen was the highest priority. Because of the sickness my salts (calcium, potassium and magnesium) levels went through the floor almost causing a heart attack. Had to be hospitalised and given supplements through a drip. I asked them about supplement drinks and vitamins they said that they were not necessary if I had a balanced diet and the drinks were useless and have loads of sugar in. I said that my energy was really low and they said that would improve as I healed. The pdoc did say there was research suggesting B vitamins can lift mood. Vx I think my multiple personalities have multiple personalities - makes for quite a party. "Books and friends should be few but good." metatone tonic has loads of b vitamins in, I've used it in conjuction with my normal meds to try and aid me with depression. the research for balanced diet and balancing mood certainly shows some positive results. Again its trating the individual in a holistic way, but what works for one may or may not work for all. At this moment in time I am bizzarely craving hobnobs. subliminal messaging I suspect. ni or ecky ecky ptang ptang....I just can\'t decide! |

Hobnobs are a common fav of members. I go through stages of craving chocolate when I am generally a savoury food person. Will look out for the tonic though as it sounds like a good idea. During my chemo treatment I craved salads, the fresh taste really helped. Vx I think my multiple personalities have multiple personalities - makes for quite a party.
