Dear Mr. Fry
I am absolutely stupid at poetry, but I just can't stand writing to you, so let it be just like this. I think it’s all because of laughter and tears I’ve been recently bursting into in the subway on my way to work and back home as I read your Moab. Yesterday I even missed the station for interchange.
It’s a long story actually. Everything began when I realized early in spring this year that my only friend beside me is Mr. Laurie as House M. D. Rather dreadful situation. Everybody I love so much happened to be living and working far away, so I just watched and watched, fascinated and nearly charmed by MRI and lupus and huge blue eyes and outstanding jaw. The seasons finished very quickly, but the sarcasm and rugged attitude to life, as a kind of a catching disease, stayed. One of my friends I happened to meet that time said – You need something positive, definitely, read this – and I began to read Wodehouse in English. Then I watched Jeeves and Woster with you and Mr. Laurie. Actually, I had seen a lot of your shows and movies before, but that time it was just what I really needed. I think it was your voice – like magnet - and the way you talk and your fingers that made me thinking of going to England. And I did it – I’ve returned from London on 30th of August. So, when I was walking and shopping on Oxford Street I bought Moab in HMV for – good luck - only 3 £ (Oh God, everything is soooo expensive in London!!!) Now, without exaggerating, I can say that that was the moment my lost belief in mankind resurrected in my soul.
Maybe we – me and my brother I was travelling with – failed to find Old Good England – like in the movies about Sherlock Holmes or about traditional skinheads, but I really think that London is very beautiful – I cried when I saw St. Paul’s under the evening cloudy skies. I cried in National Gallery. I am not emo at all. It is just because I saw beauty. It has become such a luxury and rare thing recently. But nothing else can touch me like beauty. Beauty of art, architecture, music, and man’s soul. Like yours.
I am really touched by your book. It’ s hard to explain, but, well, long story short, I want to say, that you have become a very special and important person for me since then.
There are many people, who know and admire you in Moscow, so, you are always welcome.
