I've read before about the difference between the two but what does it really mean in real terms. My condition is relatively mild compared with what some of you go through but just where do they draw the line? Any ideas and opinions welcome.

It's very simple.

If you are bipolar I you experience full blown mania

If you are bipolar II you experience only hypomania and depression.

People who are bipolar I may not experience depression though 99% of them do. In both bipolar I and II patients the severity of depression varies with the individual and has nothing to do with the diagnosis.

Hope that clarifies things for you,

If you were fortunate enough to watch the documentary on More4 called A Bipolar Expedition then that was someone with Bipolar 1 going through full blown mania (it was painful to watch but essential viewing, it's available on 4od)

I can't think of anything clever to say so I'll be quiet

Thanks for your replies folks. As I suspected mine is the II kind. I missed the More4 documentary so I'll have a look out for it on 4od.
Thanks again

I am type 1. My husband, over the past couple of days has really taken things over for me, even trying to stop me making a cup of coffee, saying 'I'll do it'.

I feel, not brilliant, but he said today 'You look ill'. I looked at myself in the mirror and I do. I look twitchy and drawn. I think he sees the onset of things before I do. Does that make sense?

He's trying to make me rest.

I'm rambling. I've had the world cup to distract me, and I love football so it does and am OK on twitter.

It's easy to sound OK in 140 characters.

Ramble, ramble.
