I definitely need a place to rant. This story about the people in the PMs office calling the national bullying helpline has me seething at the woman in charge. (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8527611.stm ) I cannot believe she has the nerve to say it would be wrong to deny it - no you stupid awful insensitive woman you don't confirm OR deny it! It's called confidentiality! How humiliating for the people in question. I hope she is sacked pronto

And now the PMs office is asking for proof? WTF? Again - confidentiality people!

That would be me.

I thought the same thing. That people may be put off seeking help.

first of all, I think its very wrong to give out information of such kind!

but I do can get that one might be trying to help, it can't be easy to know and not do anything about it.

but nonetheless it should not happen.

I am what I am

It was indeed wrong to give out such information and I can understand why the various patrons felt they had to stand down in protest. My question is where does this leave all those who need to contact a confidential bullying line? They are the ones who have had a real disservice done to them

There are other bullying helplines available though. I agree that it's hard to seek help from somewhere new but if it was me using them my trust in the helpline would have gone already. NBH have issued a bizarre statement about "competing organisations trying to shut them down". As though there is some kind of competitive market to grab on to vulnerable bullied people! (maybe they meant competitors for funding but even so it seems in bad taste)

I'm still pretty angry about this so excuse my ranting. I'm not having a go at anyone here it's just brought up some bad memories. I was bullied badly at school. One of the reasons I didn't ever say anything was that I knew that it was fuel for the bullies to know I'd been hurt enough to go to someone else. If I'd had an anonymous helpline I might have used it, but not if I thought confidential info would have been given out.

That would be me.

I agree Gadgetgirl. I was badly bullied at school too. If there had been a helpline i don't think i'd have used it, however there would have been no chance whatsoever after something like this happening.

It's rediculous for the helpline to say, well we didn't name names. In most school or work situations everyone generally knows who the people being bullied are. It's not that difficult to narrow down who made the call.
