Hi everyone
I thought that since it's now coming up pretty close to Christmas it might be a good time to start thinking about a Christmas project - if everyone's keen to do one, that is. I am assuming that there is not already a project-in-progress...I haven't seen a thread for one, so thought I would start it off and see where we go from there.
I do have an idea for something we could do, but if anyone has any better ideas or cunning ways to improve the scheme outlined below, do let me know!

We all know Stephen loves music and that he has pretty wide-ranging tastes in it. I thought it might be fun to do a mix-tape style of thing - each of us select a song that is either one of your own favourites or just something you think he might like and then we organise them into a proper playlist.

Next stage would be collecting the music. I don't know a lot about iTunes, but I do know that you can gift songs to people via email. So if we picked one of us for everyone to send their song to and then that person could either make a hardcopy via CD and post it to him, or possibly do some nifty gift-thing through iTunes straight to Stephen online (no idea if that's possible, but would be great if we could!). Songs usually cost about 99p through iTunes so it wouldn't be too expensive, and also shouldn't take too much time - the hardest parts will be each of us having to choose a song and then arranging the tracklist.

For those people who love classical music....I don't think you can really use whole symphonies (!) as your song of choice, but you could probably get away with using shorter classical tracks. If lots of people want to do classical we may have to split the playlist into classical/others so that the poor man won't have (for example):
Beatles, MOZART, Hugh Laurie, Led Zeppelin, WAGNER, Frank Sinatra, Bat for Lashes.
All good stuff, but the arrangement might seem rather bewildering!

Please let me know what you think...some people have already said they are keen, but need to know if more of you are interested.
Thank you!
Ellie x

The real question is: Which Pearl Jam song to send him? Would all of them be too much?

Pity I know next to nothing about iTunes, so my input will be limited. I did a search for how to make a mixtape on iTunes and found this.. Unsure if other people can contribute to one's own iTunes account or if we can set up a Fluffettes one.

One suggestion I do have would be if it's possible to email Ellie (or whoever chooses to be main contact on this project) an mp3 of one's song. BTW, I think we still have a gmail account set up. George prolly remembers the address. We can use that. Once all the songs are collected, put them in a zip file and upload them to a filesharing site (sendspace, megaupload, etc.), and then send Stephen the download link via Twitter. Of course assuring him that no viruses are attached

When you decide on your song, maybe you can name it this way: Title by Artist from Username. So if I send him the song Mystery by Hugh Laurie, I'd name the mp3 file: Mystery by Hugh Laure from Fryphile.mp3.

Like I said, I know this much *holds fingers really close together* about iTunes and my suggestion circumvents it. Perhaps someone familiar with its full power can suggest something better?

Ellie that is a BRILLIANT idea! I do have an itunes account but thats the extent of my knowledge I'm afraid.

Rest assured I will NOT be picking a classical piece. Do you think Stephen would like punk rock?

In any case this is going to be a very fun project to do

I was starting to wonder about Christmas too. Brilliant idea Ellie! I was thinking since we are from all over the world, we could add something local to us. Specially people from non English speaking countries. He wouldn't mind too much if he can't understand the language would he? As long as it is good music? Or maybe just instrumental? Would be something different. Any thoughts?
Again iTunes may not have many songs (knows absolutely nothing about iTunes). Mailing mp3, compiling and uploading sounds better to me..i'll leave it to the experts though.

Fryphile: this zip-file-uploading malarkey sounds a much better plan, I think we should go with that if no one ga any objections - especially because the flaw in the iTunes scheme is that there may be people who don't have it.
mvet88 and misprofessioned: you can literally use any type of music you like, the main thing is that you choose something which has meaning for you, the only issue is, as I mentioned re classical pieces, the length of the track you choose.
Am so pleased you guys like the plan, hope others do too!
Can you find out the gmail address Jeremy? Think that's probably first stage. Then we need to know how many people want to be involved and I guess we need to set a deadline for people announcing their participation?

I'm so excited about this. I have to say I kind of worry sometimes that we'll run out of ideas on day, but it doesn't seem to be the case so far

Once you have your song ready, email it to fry.projects@gmail.com. (Thanks, George!) Please make sure it's in mp3 format so we keep everything uniform.

Since everything is digitalized these days, I don't think we need to worry about making a CD. It's doubtful Stephen will use it since he's merrily manacled to his iPhone. As far as deadlines: How about December 1 to have your song emailed to the above address? Then the main contact person can upload the songs. Once the songs are uploaded, post the download link in this thread so everyone can download it/copy it and spam Stephen with it. When should we spam him? He usually disappears from Twitter around Christmas and New Years. So how about December 15th? That'll give the main contact two weeks to upload everything and make sure it's all ship shape.

Please let me know if I'm missing someting/everything.

So it will be the main contact person's job to arrange the track listing?
Also, when you send your song, don't forget to include track title, artist and your forum/twitter name, just to make the list a bit easier to arrange.

I was thinking about that, too Ellie. The track listing can be arranged in alphabetical order when put in the zip folder. We can put numbers in front of the titles if you'd like based on when the songs are received. Example: incky sends in her song first, so her song can be renamed as 01. Brilliant Russian Song by Brilliant Russian Artist from inckognito.mp3. Then maybe my song is received second, so mine will be called 02. Fryphile's Song by Fryphile's Band from Fryphile. Etc.

I was toying around with some of Stephen's Fry's English Delights and uploaded a zip file of three episodes to see how it'd work. Didn't take long at all.

OMBDFG, what a fabulous idea! Count me in. As a French song maniac, I'll find something really beautiful that he doesn't know.:-P

I'll definitly take part as well!
But the decision will be tough... I want to know what he already has!
So we just send the name of the song, not the song itself? (And if I'm wrong, how do you send a song via mail?)

We are talking of the idea of beauty, and the beauty of ideas.

Ha! How interesting... There already was (not here) the project with this idea, but don't worry it hasn't been finished.

I don't have iTunes, but if it's about emailing mp3 then count me in.

A little suggestion - would be better if people will write the name/artist of chosen song here as well. So people who have suspiciously the same taste of music won't send the same song suspiciously.
Or maybe better if contact person will inform through email that the song was taken?
Dunno.. decide to you.

@Stefi, You'll send the entire song to the contact. You'll have to save it as an mp3 file and then attach it to your email to the contact. Let me know if you need any help with this.

@striped_mouse good idea. Please post what song you plan on using in this thread.
