Hi. I’ve been lurking around the forum for a while now and finally plucked up the courage to join
About 6 months ago I was diagnosed with an illness called Coeliac Disease (pronounced see-lee-ak) which is caused by the immune system attacking the Gluten in Wheat which in turn damages the lining of the stomach and intestine.
After a few weeks of giving up Wheat (aswell as other Gluten containing ingredients) I began to feel much better. However, one unexpected bonus of giving up Gluten was that the Depression that I had suffered with for more than 20 years started to get better.
I still have an emotional fog swimming around in my head, but it is nowhere near as bad as the ‘syrup of sadness’ and despair that I have felt in the past.
The only explanation I can think of is that the allergic reaction caused by the Gluten creates inflammation which in turn causes the body to produce anti-inflammatory hormones such as Cortisol which causes stress and anxiety, and Histamine which creates a tired, emotional sensation. This combination of stress and emotion seems to combine to worsen the Depression.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Depression is caused by Gluten or that giving up Gluten will cure it. I understand that Depression is a serous illness which I believe is caused by brain chemistry rather than nutrition, but the changes I have felt over the past few months have been so incredible that it’s almost like being born again.
Has anybody else noticed a connection between their Depression and Wheat or Gluten?
