I've just read Stephen Fry in America & really enjoyed it - except it was too short. You did a funny bit on the etymology of Hoosier & left it as "unknown" but I found a citation in Stuart Berg Flexner's "I Hear America Talking". He says hoosier is a dialect word for big & its meaning is "big man" or "mountaineer". The area was settled by moutaineers from Kentucky.
Also, FYI, the St. Louis arch was built in the 60s, not the 30s.
