I am sorry if this is not quite the right area for this 'rant', but I want to show support, like the many people on this site for Stephen Fry.
I have seen quite a bit of miserable comments made about Stephen regarding Apple/IPad, which have not just been insulting or rude, but also sarcastically moronic and idiotic.
I wanted to show support for Stephen, I think he is simply a brilliant, charismatic 'national treasure', we have in the UK. The topics and awareness that Stephen makes and sends, comes I believe from the heart, and effects so many people, and also allows people, in the end, to make their own choices, which is important.
Looking forward to the new Stephen Fry book in September, all his work from documentaries, of course comedy is simply excellent, and long may it continue!

Anonymity provides license for all sorts of folks.
I can't understand, though, why anyone who's been in the public eye as long as Mr.Fry would be either surprised, baffled, or 'hurt' by this. Especially a 'techie' of sorts who probably has long since seen the darker side of anonymouse activity. LIttle bits of poo left here and there, scritching around in the dark, squeezing into tight places...kind of 'natural behavior' for some.
And kind of publically, well...let's face it...not 'kind of'...being very vocal and public about a particular tech company is going to get ANY public figure some tongue lashing by those who can be annoyed by just about anything they see or hear or read. I have one or two friends, tops, who are Apple fans and slightly uncomftorable about Mr.Fry's adoration and time spent in hand with Apple. I try not to tell them how silly they are too directly. I've been using Apple a long time and could care less really who thinks they do, or do not, provide a nice operating system or gadget. My only problem with Apple is in how they go about providing the things ( outsourcing ) and it's not just Apple doing this, so it would seem kind of wrong to criticize them alone. But...anyway...
I'd find it kind of hard to believe the fans of Mr. Fry would be swayed by some geekoid or expert or bored kid who wants to tell fart jokes at Mr. Fry's expense.

I honestly don't see how calling the general state (clue in the name, it's a generalization) of television being 'childish' and suffering from 'infantilism' insulting to the shows or its viewers. At all. First off, it's an opinion. Second off, how does watching a childish show make the viewer (assuming they are adults) any more childISH? Third off, if it does, is that necessarily a bad thing?
People spewing off vitriolic tripe at Stephen over this only prove their own point that they are childish, but that in no way implicates the sane, the reasonable, and the rest of us who are capable of thought.
Heigh ho.

Doctor Who is meant to be enjoyed by everybody and everybody includes children. I don't understand why "grown ups" are finding this so hard to take all of a sudden? *shakes head*

How did we go from the OP's original post about iPad comments to Dr.Who/television shows?
What did I miss?

Yes I too love how the topic seemed to suddenly switch to another attack people have been making lately.

I think some fans are just nostalgic for DW of the late 70s/early 80s when it went deeper into science, technical language, darker plots etc. In general classic DW feels very different to new DW (or nu Who as some will put it). But that is mainly to do with the way tv has changed in general, faster cuts, quicker pace, more accessible dialogue etc. I love both eras of DW. They both have their charm. In general tv does seem to be dominated by a lot of guff, endless reality shows, talent shows and lifestyle shows. Boring. It's not snobbery to want more intelligent, challenging television shows making an appearance. It's a desire for a bit of challenge instead of what has become an endless blur of disposable tv. These days it seems there's a tendency for adult shows to mean lots of sex, violence and swearing (look at Torchwood series 1, they fortunatly learned their mistake).

Assuming direct control...
