The title is said with tongue firmly against inside of cheek.

But, I fear, I have ordered a Windows PC, but worst of all, I am shivering in anticipation of its arrival. For the last 4+ years, I have soldiered on with a mighty 24" iMac which I love dearly, and still do to this day, but I think it's time to relegate it to more work-only duty, and the play side of computing will shift towards the new machine.

Thankfully, thankfully computers aren't being shipped with that awful piece of tripe known as Vista, but are now being thrown about with the new, shiny WIndows 7. I haven't extensively used it, but from what I have seen, it's perfectly serviceable. I still find OS X to be sexier and recherche, but I'll give Windows 7 a try.

So, what made me do this? To be honest, the same thing that would have gotten me to order a Macbook Pro. I went and ordered an HP Envy15 laptop because I was smitten by first glance. Finally, FINALLY, a PC manufacturer has decided to make one good looking, thin yet muscular computer that doesn't scream beige office decor.

Oh. Em. Gee.

I can't wait.

Like I said, I hope Steve Jobs will forgive me

My notebook/laptop thing finally arrived a few days ago, and I dare say I do like it. Moreso because it's blazingly fast than anything else. Windows 7 is still cold and sterile, and I've yet to warm up to it completely, but it is what it is. Now to load up on applications...

how is windows 7?

is it the real windows seven or that starter version? i've been reading that some machines ship with a starter version and you can't even change the wallpaper!

have you ever used linux instead? (i never have)

Hey Tacky, I too got a new HP laptop a little while ago and I just love it. The silvery business--it's so alluring and so not black.

I no longer believe that we can keep silent. We never really do, mind you. In one way or another, we articulate what has happened to us through the kind of people we become.

Win7 is still cold and sterile. BUT (and it's a mightily large but), it is much, much improved over Vista. It seems stable so far, but the ambience, the feel of it is still off from what I loved about OS X.

I've played with Linux, but never used it as an everyday OS. Too much effort required to make it work the way I want, and I don't want my home computer to require much work.

...has used Linux.

Michael,think of it this way:

OS X is for people who like to use the hammer, Linux is for people who like to build the hammer, and Windows is for people who like to throw the hammer down in a fit of rage.

Linux isn't really the complex little monster it's made out to be and some distros are v user friendly. I have an old version of SuSE I like very much. Others like Red Hat. Most come with some really fantastic 'extras' in terms of software programs ( from graphics to science to games to office stuff ) and you can pick and choose during install which ones you'd like or not. It also installs on old computers with little 'space' and/or can be 'split' with new ones ( running side by side with os x or windows...me, i like dedication instead but whatever...).

Most of these Linux distros come with good support initially and are very inexpensive compared to other options.

The part you might not like, is having to keep up with new revisions of software. This may not be as much of a downer as it used to be for 'non-geeks'. But I don't see it really as any different than having to make sure your virus software or any other software program are up to date.

Linux also allows a level of control over your computer and home network that can be really low level and on the flip side, maybe more than the average user wants to think about.

Really? Wow.

While bearing some resemblance to a MBP, it's actually not much like it at all. I was swayed by the specifications and hardware and relative build quality. The laser-etched design is something that Apple might consider for the future - it is rather cool

LOL

Awww, come on now...you know you want some brass and little table legs on that lapbook!

How about some gold filigree work done by hand in Italy? It might only cost around ten grand.

Wait...embedded rubies, sapphires, and diamonds? A handsome butler to carry it around for you?

I'm just trying to help you obtain 'forgiveness'. I will keep thinking...

Really? Wow.
