Hey everyone, I'm suffering with serious bouts of insomnia lately. It's reallt getting me down, because after 3 or 4 days of no sleep I'm left so exhausted, and overly emotional, and am left in a deep state of depression. I have a doctors appointment on Thurs, but I don't feel I can tell her, because all she can do is prescribe me sleepers, which I don't want to take, because in the end they make the problem alot worse. I just can't seem to shut off lately. My mind is constantly racing. I'm taking my meds religiously, but I can't shut off, I can't calm myself. Any tips??
Thanks,

Romanee

All this sounds so familiar to me. You should check out the insomnia thread of old. This used to be Katy and mine stomping ground.

As for tips, I find doing something constructive helps and staying awake to the point of exhaustion i.e. try not to doze during the day after a night of sleeplessness. It sometimes kicks your body clock into a reboot.

Also doing something useful makes you feel positive so you dont worry about not sleeping so much.

I told my GP about my sleep problem I explained that often I rest but not sleep i,e rest my eyes and listen to my music. He said sleep is not as important as rest as long as you take it easy and be aware that you may be less focused when tired and look after yourself.

Good luck, and sleep tight (eventually)

I also have insomnia and have been on sleepers for some years now. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.

All of Vamps suggestions are great and have used them myself to some benefit. Another thing to consider is having a sleep study. Do you know if you snore or been told that you snore or have long pauses between breaths when sleeping? I ask because after much prodding about my snoring I had a study done and the results shocked me! I never made it past phase 2 sleep and several times my blood oxygen dropped to 72%.

Sometimes I get myself worked up and worried that I won't be able to sleep so that is when all of Vamps suggestions really help. I have been told by others that hot baths, eating a couple of peices of toast, clean and fresh smelling sheets on the bed.......also help.

Good luck!

I would love to be involved in a sleep study - is it difficult to get referred?

Hope you are well Marz.
