I have always had a desire to spend some time driving around the UK getting to know the real Great Britain. While I was mulling over the possibilities I suddenly realised that it was the home of our Mr Fry and I began to wonder if he would be willing to let me buy him a drink.
That thought evolved into who else I would like to meet as I travelled, both in the UK and the rest of the world, and I began to wonder what would happen if I was to write to a number of people I either admire or am fascinated by and ask them for a few moments of their time. What’s the worst that could happen, they say no or don’t answer at all?
I sat down and started on my list, thinking of interesting people, and quickly came to realise that virtually every name was of a celebrity. It made sense that I would only think of people that I know of and obviously I only know them because of their fame or infamy. But I was disappointed. As fascinating as the people on my list were I thought that there must be a hundred others out there for every one of those celebrities that was equally as fascinating and had their own amazing story to tell. If I was to travel the world and truly get a sense of each country and its people then I had to get outside the realm of celebrity.
I started my list with the intention of having 100 I would write to in the hope of meeting but didn’t come close to populating it. I was hoping that the forum members here would be able to suggest people that either they would like to meet or that they feel I should meet. The only criterion is that they (obviously) be alive so that I can write them a letter begging a few moments of their time.
If you could meet anyone who would it be?

Sherlock Homes, Dr Watson, Rumi, Tony Slattery, Millicent Fawcet and the Pankhursts, Stephen Fry, Terry Jones, Pinky and Brain, Leonardo da Vinci, the New Zealand All Blacks Rubgy team (phwoar!), Michaelangelo, Victoria Wood, Hercules, Hugin and Mugin, My two old singing teachers KL and DF who are fabulous people, Mrs Paterson - my English teacher from years ago, Mr DB, my old primary school teacher and childhood villain whom I would like to forgive.

I can certainly understand the All Blacks being on your list and am proud to say that, like all young Kiwi males, I was a potential All Black. Until I found out I couldn't run and hold the ball at the same time.
I'm adding Alan Alda to my list. Actor, writer, director, tech fan...sound like anyone else you know?

I am terrible with names, so didn't know who Alan Alda was - until I saw him on wikipedia, then of course I recognised him. A good man to have on the list.
You're a Kiwi - are you still in NZ? I lived there until I was 5 (born in Britain, so not a true Kiwi) I don't think it is just those rose-tinted sunglasses we often wear when remembering our formative years - they really were happy, good years. Beautiful land, really good people, but I can't describe it in words how much I loved it there - I clearly rmember not wanting to leave for England. I call myself a reluctant Brit, I live in Germany now.

Yep, I'm a born and bred kiwi, I even have the All Black logo tattooed on my shoulder to prove it. But I have to come clean and admit that I live in Australia and have for a number of years.
I grew up in a small farming/fishing town in NZ and I can;t think of a better place to lived as a kid.

Remember Fred Dagg? (John Clarke) I loved his comedy sketches - lived in NZ for 4 years, 1973-77. John Clark now does comedy in Australia and is still funny. He would be good to meet.

I do remember Fred Dagg! Black singlet, gumboots and Trevor. I will certainly be adding him to my list and he's relatively close as well. I think he has been so successful in Australia that many people wouldn't even know he was a Kiwi.
I will add Sam Neill to the list as well. He probably pioneered the current troop of antipodean actors making in Hollywood.
Of course the New Zealander I most would have liked to have met was Sir Edmund Hillary. Unfortunately that will never happen now.

Hi Ideacollector, I think I can see a bit of a pattern in your list.
I may have to steal one of people from your list for my own.
Seth Macfarlane, because he is multi talented, and one of the funniest people I know.
Not easy coming up with a hundred names, huh?
I wonder what it says that I have the US President on my list but not the Australian Prime Minister (or the English one).

My list is very simple.
I would genuinely want to meet the Fluffettes. Every single one of them. They're better than celebrities in my eyes.
Natalie: "Are you finished with your coffee cup Stephen?"
Stephen: "Yes Natalie darling I am, although it's not a coffee cup, it's a teacup..."
*5 minute debate later*
Result: The contents of the cup do not determine the name of the cup. The cup is a cup/mug whether it contains tea/coffee/ribena/hot chocolate or any other beverage.

I'm going to keep this to people who are still alive, otherwise it'll go on forever.
Stephen Fry
Bruce Springsteen
Patti Scialfa
Hugh Laurie
Anybody on the New York Yankees
Meryl Streep
Robert De Niro
Craig Ferguson
Helena Bonham Carter
Robert Downey Jr.
Barack Obama
Michelle Obama
J.K. Rowling
A bunch of other people I'm forgetting at the moment
And I agree with Mandibles that meeting every single one of the Fluffettes would be totally amazing.

. Stephen Fry
. Colin Firth

I'm not sure if I'm going to be embarrassed asking this, but I am on the other side of the world after all. Who is Craig Ferguson? He is on a couple of peoples list but the name is not ringing any bells for me.
I am going to add Richard Curtis to my list for having written a couple of my favourite movies and a couple of the best TV shows ever.
