Hi hon, I'm in much the same place as you. My therapist was great but he quit his job, referring me to someone else who in the first session told me she didn't think she could help me. So no more help on the NHS for me.
Now I really gained a lot out of therapy, just having a non judgmental ear listening and suggesting possibly, just someone in the world I can sit down and be completely honest with. My family know so little... friends know more but I hardly see them. And you all know what happened to my partner scaring me from having one again. I have so many issues I need help with I don't think I have a choice but to pay...
I've started looking for private therapists but they don't come cheap. I'm seeing my GP on Friday and will get her opinion.
Life really likes to shit on you from above at times hey?

I've just said the same thing to a friend by PM. I never share the worst details of my illness, particularly the past with e anyone, but have managed with a psyche. Difficult, but I still did it, (to a large degree.)
And it did me good.
I hope things get better for you greentree. And that's an inadequate thing to say I know.
Sending you good wishes. T xxxx

Hi Ks,
Some therapists do offer reduced rates if your on a low/no income. Usually says this on the BACP website with their details. You have to specifically ask them regarding this, but some do.
I am also seeing someone privately (who is great) and the two overlapped cos of the NHS being dicks, basically. NHS lot was supposed to happen first, and then (if required) the private things was an option...but anyway. But yeah, it is expensive. I feel guilty as hell for going cos it costs so much (and my other half is paying cos i earn hardly anything). I'm not worth it, you see.
It's bloody government cuts that are closing the day centre where i go for the NHS stuff. It's not NHS cuts - its Birmingham Social Services, cos adult mental health services get passed from the gp and nhs, into the social services psych/counselling service for some weird reason. I know i'm lucky in that my other half is ok with paying for me to see someone, and it makes me wonder what people who can't afford to go private do when cuts are made.
The nhs woman (I think) would try and refer me to the psychotherapy service, but i know it's up to two years waiting, so i dunno if there's much point. But then i also know i can't see the private woman for ever cos of the price......
ho hum..........

Timshel - Mumford and Sons
Cold is the water
It freezes your already cold mind
Already cold, cold mind
And death is at your doorstep
And it will steal your innocence
But it will not steal your substance
But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand
And you are the mother
The mother of your baby child
The one to whom you gave life
And you have your choices
And these are what make man great
His ladder to the stars
But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand
And I will tell the night
Whisper, "Lose your sight"
But I can't move the mountains for you

I think I have found a therapist I would like to see and it does say on his website that he will consider taking less from people who are on low incomes which is good coz I am on DLA and income support. My DLA will cover the cost but usually I use it for other stuff, like petrol to get me out and about. I am seeing my GP today and will ask her about it.

This is interesting as I have a friend who is as yet without diagnosis, his NHS psyche can't decide between bipolar and BPD.
The mental health care where he lives isn't too good an he isn't seen as often as he should be. He is now receiving DLA too.
Maybe he could look into this.
Thanks for this info guys.

If he chooses to see a therapist, I know you know this, but make sure she/he is qualified and a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Also your friend has the right to a 2nd opinion from A PSYCHIATRIST FREE OF CHARGE. If it were me I'd be demanding it. I wish I had done so myself earlier in my life.

Yup, I know about the requirements. I have also told him that I think he needs a second opinion and should ask for it, but he really is ill right now and just seems to come away from his appointments tied in a knot.
He gets wound up easily right now and hasn't really been listened to. I suggested also that he just write a letter to the head of the team and request a second opinion that way. He wouldn't have to confront anyone then, but he so far hasn't.
On the plus side the CAB are doing a lot to help him and just today he said that his psyche seems to be taking things more seriously and has called him in for a review.
I think he has been intimidated by his psyche, he describes her as cold and arrogant, and then he gets angry and defensive with her.
He is very disillusioned right now with his NHS mental health care and I don't blame him. I am staggered that as ill as he has been he has been left for weeks at a time. Even if he doesn't look for a private psyche, he feels relieved that there is an alternative available when things get tough.
It's a light at the end of the tunnel so to speak.

Ks, that's cool! Go for it.
I found when i was looking for a therapist that it often says 'may be able to offer reduced rates for those on low income, please ask/enquire for more information'. So you just gotta ask. It prob depends on how much you get, but its always worth asking.
Tito - has your friend been in touch with PALS? They're pretty good. I've emailed them a couple of times about my (latest) psych (who was a mare) and they were very good. They can give info on people to contact or where to go next if your friend's not happy with his psych.
In my recent experience of the NHS mental health services, individuals within the system can be great, but the system as a whole is pretty crappy.

Yes, thanks greentree, he has been in touch with Pals too. I've sent him lots of links over the last few months to various places.
I think it's just a sad case of a half soaked psyche team.
Put it this way, six months ago my daughter was way more ill than he was. Because our psyche teams are excellent, on the whole, and very on the ball, my daughter is 90% better and he is much worse.
Sadly a big stumbling block with him is how his illness has taken hold, he is pessimistic about being listened to.
But I am still glad concerning the info on private psyches as it has made him better. He doesn't feel as stuck I don't think.
Cheers greentree and KS, I'll let you know how he goes on. xx

oh my effing head....
and i don't mean in a headache sort of way
i just wish it would shut the fuck up and work normally
just when you think the shitty tapes have stopped playing in your brain,
you talk about the content of them with therapist
and lo,
the volume doth increase and they start drowning out everything else.
I can just hear my mother going 'i've seen people who are depressed and you're not',
and going on about my 'problems' as if they are things to be dismissed and swept under the carpet
or i should feel ashamed of them.
Loud and clear.
And on a seperate note, does anyone here find that when their partner/close friend/relative is having a hard time, the anxiety levels (yours) increase? I find i get v stressed when other people are having a hard time. Maybe cos i can't do anything to fix it, or i don't like seeing people in pain.... i'm very bad at dealing with negative emotion - mine or other people's. Is that usual? Or just me being more of a freak than normal?
