I am dismayed that when I recently asked 2 family 14 year olds to give me some superlatives to describe the universe I was woefully underwhelmed with 'big' & 'large' ... some redemption was gained by a little thought and then 'infinite'
There is one word you could have used I explained ... what about 'AWESOME' .... but no it seems that was totally lost on them ....a can of coke is 'awesome' .... a computer game is 'awesome' .... the universe is just 'big'
Mr Fry sir ,,,where oh where did our rich and powerful language go? How did it get so downgraded that now our most powerful and exquisite superlatives are used to describe the detritus and banal rubbish of every day life
Perhaps we ought to invent some more, and perhaps better, superlatives for the awesomeness of the universe and our magnificent solar systems..... but that's such a shame as 'awesome' was just perfect
