-> In response to the slightly panicked topic about what to do while he was away from Twitter (a concept currently passing me by I must admit) I thought it might be fun - and give the afflicted something to do - to write Stephen a story. Write one sentence, then let someone else chip in. We'll see where it goes...

Once upon a time, while Stephen was elsewhere, a brightly coloured dustbin called Reg arrived on the doorstep of a man called Harold...

The dustbin, who was named by the rubbish company, was happy to begin his first day at work.

... For his last career had left him down in the dumps, and for the dustbin, his first day of work was as of yet, an unspoiled, wonderful and exciting day.

Reg had no idea what his new boss would want him to do, he only hoped it involved more than the storage of rubbish.

Once upon a time, while Stephen was elsewhere, a brightly coloured dustbin called Reg arrived on the doorstep of a man called Harold. The dustbin, who was named by the rubbish company, was happy to begin his first day at work, for his last career had left him down in the dumps, and for the dustbin, his first day of work was as of yet, an unspoiled, wonderful and exciting day. Reg had no idea what his new boss would want him to do, he only hoped it involved more than the storage of rubbish.

Little did he know, however, that the privatized waste disposal company of which he believed himself to be an integral part - and the agenda of which he believed to be nothing but purely innocent - was actually a front for a shadowy cabal of unscrupulous, illegal WIG-FENCERS!

I'm a histrionic, holistic, herculean halibut.

With duelling having been made illegal many years before, a small band of mildly insane old families from the Oxford area, headed by Lord Sniffy-Arseface had formed The Grand Court of Regal Wig-Fencers. With the help of a minor royal, in the 1800s, they had procured a number of wigs from members of the English royal family and these wigs were used to decide the fate of wrong-doers in the Oxford area through a brutal Trial by Wig-Fencing. Although the precise details of such a trial have historically been kept secret, Reg discovered that....

a secret code had been stenciled into his interior, which likely pointed to the whereabouts of these details. However, the whole of it , the enitre revelation, was too much to contain and Reg became very, very depressed between two and four o'clock that afternoon. He didn't want to know anything about Wig Fencers and insane old families. He was created to hold trash, of course, but it was all too much for him. Fortunately, some passerby had angrily thrown a used cell phone into him and Reg told the phone, whose name was Ipal, he wanted to become something other than a dustbin. Ipal, though at least five minutes too old to be useful to anyone, did happen to know of a rogue engineer, who was wanted by every legal authority on the planet, that might be able to help him out. After several attempts at various phone numbers, Ipal finally connected with a voice that said...

"Dustbin, you are in mortal danger. Leave yourself at the curb by 10:43 p.m. so that our operatives may collect you. Do not discuss this with anyone, including your new employer. Especially your new employer." While this news frightened Reg, it also intrigued him since he'd spent part of his previous employment set up in a living room where he was able to watch nonstop episodes of "Danger Man." Perhaps Reg really was a...

Dustbin of Destiny. He had long suspected it. The years of carrying other people's rubbish had not taken away his self-belief. He had attended a seminar where Trashcan Terence, the noted motivational speaker, had urged them: 'never let trash take the gleam off your dream.' As Reg had hurled himself into the audience that night, amidst the clatter of dustbin-lid applause, he knew...

Trashcan was right. It was only a matter of time before Reg would be called upon to serve his country and his kind. But in what way? Would he be asked to risk his life, to perhaps sacrifice himself? He didn't know, but he knew he was ready and that no other dustbin would do. So, he arranged to have himself at the curb at the appointed time to await his fate. He was not afraid, in fact he was filled with the kind of courage only a stalwart and patient dustin posseses. He was curious about one thing, however...

would he finally meet the underground, rogue engineer? But this led to another question: Would he actually meet this engineer? As he waited for his mysterious pickup contact to arrive, Reg began wondering if he was making the right move or if he was just a pawn in a bigger game. One whose rules were unknown to him. Suddenly, he took on a reflective glow as the headlights of an approaching vehicle pulled up and...

And a man dressed like a longshoreman jumped out. The man looked up and down the street as if to see if he was being watched. The man grunted in what might have either satisfaction or constipation, Reg didn't know which. But then the man leaned close and said: "Dustbin, you're to come with me. Just be yourself, act like a dustbin and everything will be all right." Reg would have nodded if he could, but instead clattered his lid just a little. The man picked him up, placed him in back of the truck, and said...

"Would you like something to eat? I ate some bananas earlier and you're welcome to the peels. They're nicely rank but perhaps too slimy for you. Or would you prefer something with more iron? I might have some loose change that's slipped down between the seats of the car."

Reg simply stared at the man, still feeling a little pensive. The man said,"I see, you're a little cautious aren't you? I understand. Perhaps if I told you my name, since I know yours, you would be more comftorable. My name is Pinky and I am a close friend of the man you're going to see, besides also being your escort. Don't worry Reg, I am your friend and you are safe. He will help you achieve your personal goal of evolving beyond the state of being a dustbin. The only thing I ask of you is this...."

And Pinky paused for a moment, as if gathering his thoughts. Reg was, if anything, the most patient of dustbins, so he waited for Pinky to speak. Finally, Pinky said, "Reg, sometimes it will seem as if the mission is going nowhere, that we've dragged you from your new job to be nothing but a receptacle for man's rubbish. I ask you to trust us, even if it might seem you are alone and facing certain death. For we are with you at all times, even on the darkest and loneliest nights."
Reg clattered his lid in agreement. Then Pinky continued. "I am taking you to the man in charge where you will receive further instructions. I do know this, however. You will be placed in a position to spy upon the very people who would try to destroy...
