This topic title is shamelessly robbed from one on the QI forum.

I'll start us off with my new blog:
http://roystonvanderkerkoff.wordpress.com/

Started on Monday, and just about managed to post each day so far.
I've got this crazy idea I might become a writer, in spite of my now advancing years, and this blog is partly a practice area, so any feedback and advice will be more than welcome.

Got an epic ready for Saturday, which will mostly be of interest to those old enough to have played Football Manager on the ZXSpectrum, many years ago. Actually, it'll be exclusively interesting to those people, well strictly speaking those that were old enough, and in fact DID play that game.

None of my own really, but a few of friends or that I like:

The professor is still sorting out Thonatos' poetry. There's a link on the site back to his blog where he provides some revelation about the work.

One of my favorite 'flash' writers, Amelia Breckheart, though I think her family has been a bit slow putting her writings up.

Recently rebooted my blog, many a left wing rambling, occassionally interspersed with blatant fangirling

And my deviantART which is generally updated alongside the blog or occassionally instead of

I'll have to have a proper look at all of these when I get a chance.

I've made it to the two week mark without missing a day!
(though a couple are a bit lightweight really.)

if I post before midnight, that'll be a full 4 weeks now (with only minor cheating, mostly Friday's which was an empty post for some reason, so a very brief quote was dropped in).

Yesterday's (And They're Off - http://roystonvanderkerkoff.wordpress.com/2009/06/13/and-theyre-off/) was an attempt at something new. I don't think it really worked though, so any opinions on what could be improved would be good.

I this that last post was pretty creative

Are all the other posts fiction too?

Not a criticism here, but a suggestion and based only on my own preferences.

Blogs that are thematic or carry on around a specific focus ( fiction, poetry, commentary - on whatever-, etc ) are easier to read than those that are all over the map. For instance, someone starts a blog and comments on politics then throws in their favorite song lyrics, then raves about some new movie...are, to me, slightly incoherent to read. I prefer it when a blog is created, for instance, for personal commentary and all the posts reflect that or, and I'm probably being redundant here, is a place to talk about rock music and only rock music. I hope that makes sense.

There are so many blogs out there that the ones that reflect some general purpose tend to stand out versus the ones that are simply landfills for people's unuttered annoyances in a day ( e.g. "My boss sucks" ).

None of the above applies to anything but my own opinion of course. I don't know the game you referenced earlier, but I do like post. If you continue it I might also like to see the commentators 'fleshed out' a little more ( I didn't quite understand why DeGale was working with a group of experts...). It might be kind of cool if one of them was speaking and Art suddenly broke them off or maybe there was tension between a couple of characters. Stuff like that.

OK, I'm not explaining myself very well so am going to jet X-D Before I do though, I hope you will be encouraged to keep writing

Really? Wow.

Thanks for the feedback Nitro.

I originally intended to write a piece every day, but couldn't keep up, so day to day stuff snuck in as well. I agree though, a single focus would make a lot more sense, so I'm going to experiment with what wordpress can do, as you can have more than one blog. I'll be able to keep everyday life and the writing practice apart then.

A teacher friend said the 'And They're Off' piece was a bit contrived. Which I agree with to be honest. I had a germ of an idea but struggled to make something of it. If I wasn't using the blog as public practice, it would probably have gone in the bin. I did google the character names though, and as far as I can tell they aren't real people or characters anywhere else, so maybe DeGale and his secret cabal of experts will be seen again somewhere........

Oh pish! There's very little writing that isn't. Honestly. I mean, the vast majority of writing out there is contrived. Now, I can see wanting to set yourself apart and that's a good thing. But you have to start somewhere and if right ouf the gate we start talking about contrivance, it strikes me as bit premature in the bigger picture of your overall growth as a writer.

BUT - you agree with and respect your teacher and that's a relationship that's more important than anything some stranger on a forum has to say X-D Please don't take my pish-poshing as anything other than what it is: the strong opinion of a serious idiot X-D

Really? Wow.
