Stephen Fry, being interested in facts rather than myths, might like to know that he got it wrong about the "Mithras" in his QI shows broadcast tonight! (please bring this to his attention)
"Mithras" was not originaly a Roman god, but adopted by the Romans from the Persian god "Mithra" the Sun God. "Mithraism" spread to Asia Minor and finally reached Rome in about 68 BC.

And for specific similarity to Christianity there is no evidence that stands up to the vaguest scholarly glance: straw-man beating is a pretty weak act for a show I thought had some intelligence, as well as quite interesting-ness. [One 19th Century writer essentially manufactured the comparison. No-one today thinks he had any historical or meaningful reason for so doing]. |
