However you spell "monetizing", there's almost a note of apology to Stephen's latest podgram when he talks about generating income from his site. I've registered specifically to say that he needn't feel this way and I appreciate the fact that he's not going down the pop-up advertising route used by so many other sites.

As a web developer myself I know that the costs associated with running a busy website are considerable and increasing. It's certainly not reasonable to expect stephenfry.com to be a financial drain and I will happily support it provided that the paid-for content is worthwhile (as I'm sure it will be).

Maybe people who donate a certain amount of money each year could be a Friend Of Fry, and have a special badge on the forum?

If I understand it correctly, one of the main problems is that the podcasts consume a huge bandwidth. Maybe the webmasters could investigate alternative ways of hosting them to ringfence those costs? Surely there are organisations who would relish the opportunity to advertise on that channel and who could either arrange hosting, or pay the hosting cost?

I find that although it is quite lovely and comfortable to be advertisement free there's nothing wrong with a few commercials. That how "the daily show" and "the colbert report" manage to stay free online. I don't mean those classless ads like dating websites, porn and trick contests but well made ones. I'm sure most people wouldn't mind a few ads for blackberry, apple and other businesses capable of making good ads.

Actually, a few porn adverts might be fun.

While I understand that Stephen should not be out of pocket, I do have slight concerns about being expected to pay. I ask just two things, if we must pay for services, please make it affordable for us paupers in the group, and please have an option to pay with paypal or some other form which does not require a credit or debit card.

I trust completely that Stephen is not doing this as a money making scheme, and I sensed his tone of appology in his podgram. So I am more than willing to pay for use of some services if I can afford it, as I know it will be going to good use.

i have a suggestion about the $ -
(oh, sorry that's very american but i don't have a pound thingy)

would there be a way to ask for half and half or 25%/75% donations? to say "half goes to website, half goes to hiv related charities" or "half goes to website, half goes to the bipolar foundation" or "half goes to website, half goes to whatever-wildlife-thing-is-chosen" ??? OR 25% goes to website, 75 to other, etc?

or would that look kinda cheeky?

would be interesting if there was some way to partly fund the website but also help whatever causes he supports. but only if it came across with the good intentions.

"HELLO I'M TACTILE !" is an anagram of my name
