There are thousands and thousands of different books in our world. However, what would be the most fundamental must read literature books to read in our short lifetime?
I admit it's a very vague question. Sorry. But there just isn't a straight forward answer - if there is actually one possible.
Cheers.

I guess the ones to read would be the ones that interest you:)
There is no point reading a book on something that does not interest you in the slightest, is there? You are right though, there are thousands and thousands of different books out there.
I myself find I am drawn to factual events; JFK's assassination is one event that truly interests me. Crime scene investigations are also interesting to me and forensic science etc. I love all that.

William Faulkner. Probably "The Sound and the Fury" or "As I Lay Dying". Rereading Faulkner periodically is great just to listen to the voices of his characters. I will always hear something new each time I read his work.
