because there doesn't seem to be a thread about music already which I am surprised about, music seems to be a big part of many people's lives.

What do you like? What do you hate (apart from the obvious stuff)? Do you play an instrument? Are you in a band/do you make music by yourself? How many ipods do you own?

etc etc...

what kind of metal? ALL kinds? i suppose some of the stuff I like could be classed as metal, but that's more of a coincidence than any kind of conscious leaning towards the genre...and most of it's related to one particular vocalist in one way or another. Don't ask who though because I will never shut up about him

Gah I keep writing really long posts and then deciding they're total bollocks and deleting them so I don't totally humiliate myself.

METAL!

I've been meaning to ask this before - JUST metal? Thousands of years of human history, millions of cultures and instruments...and just one style of relatively modern western music appeals to you?
Maybe I'm misjudging you and there are other styles you don't mention, but when people say I like just one type of music (and it's usually metal, I find) I wonder what they would think if they met someone whose tastes in other areas were similarly limited. Wouldn't you find it odd if someone said they only liked French food? Only medical dramas on TV? Only fantasy novels? Only films noir? Only denim clothes? And furthermore that anyone who felt otherwise was a deluded fool?
I try my best to embrace everything, and where I am not capable I at least try to be an informed dissenter, rather than a knee-jerk "never heard it but don't like it anyway" type.

My comfort zone is rock, particularly early 90s "grunge": Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden. Can't go wrong with 80s pop IMO. Interestingly, Blender magazine had a list of the 50 worst songs ever, and I like most of those songs.

Don't know too much about classical music, but I've never heard a piece that I detested. "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Grieg = AWESOME

Country - I think not.

Rap - hardcore gangsta thugs are punkbitches. Gimme Beastie Boys instead.

And I'm not ashamed to bust some Ice Ice Baby lyrics on a chump.

Cuz I go crazy when I hear a cymbol.
And a hi-hat with a souped up tempo.
I'm on a roll, it's time to go solo.

Oh, and there's this one guy who's pretty good. Hugh . . . something or other.

Nooo...really bits from almost every genre except Country and Western. Oddest part of my collection must be the Phil Collins/Genesis section.

Pretty much everything except for hip hop and rap. I love all sorts like classical, jazz, swing, new wave, new romantic, glam rock, old 70s punk, goth, industrial, EBM, darkwave, deathrock. I also like lots of smatterings from genres like rock, metal, ethereal and riotgrrl. J-rock, visual kei rock and J-goth are all good stuff too.

People who listen to only one/type/genre of music...what's up with that?

You wouldn't eat only one food for the rest of your life, would you?

Music is a kaleidoscopic confection box of human emotion and there are so many colours to enjoy - why restrict your pleasure?

There is great and terrible music in every genre, just explore, explore and explore.

I love music

Brilliantly put, Saturn. I love your kaleidoscope analogy. In connection with your comment about great and terrible music - absolutely. Why is it that everyone so far has been down on country music? The fact that so many people criticise it in such a loose fashion is why I have always tried to give it a chance. It's not my favourite type of music, but it is a rich and varied genre with various sub-forms just like heavy metal, soul, jazz and classical. Putting down country music is like putting down television, and we all know how silly and ignorant that kind of statement is.
Whenever I hear someone putting down country or television in an absolute manner I respond with the following analogy - "And if your most frequent encounters with writing were tabloids, gossip mags and pornography would you also dismiss all literature?"

Well I've never really listened to that much Country myself but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand, I just haven't really heard much that I like, apart from songs that have a country tinge, like maybe Eagles, or some REM, or other rock bands that have infused Country tinges into it.

Well, that's the thing. Perhaps people don't reap pleasure from particular brands of bands.
