Hello there fellow fry followers,
( I am new to the forum )
I am heading off to university in the fall and am considering a macbook pro. I have heard that there are limitations when using macs, but I'm not sure what they are. I configured the following on the apple site: 2.66hz i7 intel core processor, 8GB memory, 500GB hard drive @ 2700rpm, iWork, Microsoft Office, and Parallels Desktop 5.0. Do these specs seem adequate for normal student-y work? (I won't be heavy in to graphics and design)
Any input you may have would be appreciated
Thanks guys!

That will easily chomp on any schoolwork you can find, and pretty much anything else you'll ever come across
Limitations are that it won't natively run stuff written for Windows (Although Parallels and/or Boot Camp will fix that)

If you can afford a Mac Book Pro as a new student, you are going to be quite alright
And, fwiw, ditto gihsu.

I have had a similar problem with my Mac in the past, mine was due to it going into screensaver mode and it resetting the graphics for some strange reason.

Anyone seen the report on poor conditions in China's Apple sweatshops? Here you'll find people working a minimum of 80 hours a week for, frankly, sod all. Their morale and health is low, but hey, it's Christmas soon ... and those ipads are so sexy!
Steve Jobs is one of the richest men in the world. Technology shouldn't come at this price. I'm surprised Steven Fry hasn't used his considerable influence to inform people that this 'sexy' technology is born from an ugly past.
Also, on the subject of sexy new technology, how good can a design be when it underestimates the usage parameters? Yes, I mean the iphone, ipod, with their delicate screens.
Love to you all,

BenJob, that's a good point and I wish it were broadcast to the general public more but...I'm not so hopeful it would change consumer habits very much. I think in absence of video broadcast on these conditions - because people need to SEE a thing to be 'moved' most of the time - it's going to be difficult to get much change in said habits. BTW, I believe Motorola and some other tech manufacturers share workers/plants over there. The Chinese gov is usually very good about keeping 'bad' stories from going 'viral' ( iow, they are still good at propaganda...they are, after all, still a Communist government. )
And what do you mean by 'usage parameters'? IMO, that's an obtuse term not to mention it could also mean many different things.

Only limitation I've found is the voice recognition software (MacSpeech) is inferior to Dragon for the PC. It's the only program I've upgraded by going by to the PC. But hey, dictate to the PC and edit on the Mac. Bob's your proverbial.
(and you can run windows on your Mac anyway)
