Hi Everyone,
Thought I'd start a thread that provides information for those who are seeking the services of either a Psychiatrist or Psychologist.
Please feel free to add information in order to help others with the processes involved and experiences gained.

I'll start by providing information with regards to South Australia.

How do you see a Psychiatrist: You first need a referral from a GP.
How much did it cost: Nothing (Medicare paid for it, despite income level)
How long was the initial waiting period: About 2 months.
How long does each visit go for: Initially an hour per visit, with each visit decreasing in time, depending on how you are progressing of course.
What to expect: Initially a diagnosis needs to reached. This may take several visits. After this, options should be put forward for you for consideration, ranging from medication to advise and support. Visits should continue until you are both comfortable that you are coping better.

How do you see a Psychologist: Find a Psychologist in the Yellow Pages, and call for an appointment. No GP referral required.
How much did it cost: Depends on the Psychologist. I was quoted ~$110/hour, but I'm guessing this varies. Private extras cover will cover some of the gap. I was told Medicare does not provide any coverage with Psychologists who consult privately. But please check upon making initial contact though.
How long is the initial waiting period: About 2 weeks depending on heavily booked the Psychologist is..
How long does each visit go for: Probably the same as for a Psychiatrist. But unknown.

Hope this helps,
Take care,
Pete

I think I can offer a satisfactory acount of how it's done in the U.K, having begun the process just 2 days ago. It is somewhat similar to pete. I went to my GP a couple of times, she's referred my to a psychiatric nurse, who will asess me and refer me on to a psycholigist, shrink, therapist, funeral director - what ever it is i need.

That is at least my impression on how it's happening in Cornwall, U.K

Oh and it should take about 3 weeks for the psychiatric nurse to contact me, but that's relatively quick compared to the rest of the country, according to my GP.

Sorry for my incorrect spellings, I'm rather angry for some reason and am rushing this.

Hi,

A friend of mine is has started the process here in Yorkshire, and the practitioners at different levels of expertise had out lined a common plan which he gathers may be 'rolling out' across the U.K.

First the G.P. tries to treat the depression / psychiatric malaise with medication. This being especially true if it is deemed to be reactive depression.

Upon failing, or at the patient's insistence - an interview with a psychiatric nurse is arranged. This interview can take 4-6 weeks to happen and is used as a sort of 'filter' to manage the Consultant's workload.

If the patient is deemed ill enough and / or the case is proving treatment resistant / more complex ( i.e. pointing at a more advanced mental illness or treatment scenario ) the psychiatric nurse refers the patient straight on to one of the Consultant's team. This team member is a qualified psychiatric Doctor.

If the case is still more involved, the psychiatric Doctor confers with the Consultant in charge of that team or one gets to see the chief consultant instead.

In either case, the consultant will get to view the patient's notes as part of his/her supervisory duties.

If Cognitive therapy or counselling is appropriate, it will be arranged at this point.

Follow up hospital 'out patient' appointments of about 3 months apart are arranged, or if the condition is thought to be relatively straight forward, a letter is sent back to the G.P who will administer the chemical treatments and monitor the situation instead.

In my friend's case, this was literally all in the same day. Whilst he waited for weeks to see the nurse, he was then ushered into a doctor's office - and then they were eventually all joined by the consultant, who had fortunately become free at the time.

Had the consultant not been immediately available, some weeks may have passed again before a consultation 'slot' would become available.

Your mileage may of course vary.

F.F.

It may be different here in the US but I'm having trouble myself.
My doctor put me in for a referral so my medical insurance will pay for it. Well there aren't many psychologists/psychiatrists in this area. The four numbers they referred me to are useless. Two have moved to other areas, one is not taking new patients, and the fourth telephone number was just a general number at a hospital.
I may have to either pay for one myself, or see if I can get one in Raleigh covered by insurance, but that's an hour drive. I can't see paying for someone when my insurance covers up to two visits per week.
How does one pick a doctor anyway? Choose a name at random from the phone book?

I know the answer to this but I'm desperate.

some of you know about my issues with diagnoses.
I want one for certain but don't want one. Long story.

If I was to get myself referred back to the MH unit would I have ANY SAY at all in the time I was seen?
I mean - I can not - WILL NOT have time off work in teaching time as this won't wash and I'll have to give more information than I want and I'm not prepared to.

I can't ask for a time - can I?

there is a psych nurse I used to see who once said to me after an Anxiety management class 'You're not like the others'
Like - thanks!!
She could see something then - that I couldn't.
Does anyone think I might be able to see her at a mutually continent time?
I remember being able to call her last time I was seeing people and arrange to go in.

Anyone had any experience of this?

I'm even thinking of going private so that I can see someone without school knowing at all. (Not really got the cash though)

Thanks.

Thank you.

An occasional appointment I can cope with.
I can say it's a hospital appointment and be telling the truth and no one need know.
It's the possibility of going back week after week or on a regular basis I can't see working for me.
I am going to call my doctor on Monday and try and speak to her about this.
I need to get something sorted before I go back to work in a couple of weeks - in my mind - and set the ball rolling if I think I can do it.

Are you in a college or university? When I was going to Marshall U they had free counselors for this sort of thing and the one I had nailed the problem.

I would be very interested to hear the trials and tribulations that one has to endure in order to get a diagnosis of manic depression by private means.

Hi,

I've also had success with a councellor at college/university after having two awful experiences with my GP where I felt as if I was just wasting his time and that I was just being fobbed off with the old chestnut that "everyone feels a bit down at your age, its just part of growing up" which was of no help to me, and I was made to feel like I was wasting their time. Which meant that it was almost 18 months before I built up the courage to try again, this time with a GP at university who referred me to a fantastic psychiatrist at my university, who helped me a lot, and didn't cost me a thing.
