I was just wacthing the France eps with my friends and we found it tres amusant epescailly as I had my gsce french speaking mock on monday during which I had to a presentation and mine was on Stehen.
Anyway I've rambled on for long enough and I'm sure no-one eles cares but we thought it was funny! Oh and yes I do knw this is riddled with spelling mistakes but I am still at school and thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
If you have read all this drivvel but I suppose it was your own choice.

That's weird, I had mine on Tuesday and I did mine on Mr Fry too! Et oui, je pense que c'etait tres, tres amusant aussi et j'adore Le Fry avec tous de mon coeur!

P.S I LOVED the beret! What a jaunty angle!

I've rather misunderstood Burt and his bat sperm.

Normally when watching QI apart from laughing a lot, I do find I tend towards the Alan Davies score at the end of the show. I tend to know very little and always launch the torpedo claxon with my replies (yes, I am one of those people who shout out answers when watching panel games :-// )

However, with the French show for once I knew most of the answers - even ones the panellists didn't! At last something I learned at school actually came in handy in later life, yay for me!

I haven't done any type of French exam for about 6 years. I was therefore very proud that I was able to understand Alans' "Blue Whale" question at the start of the show.

The "pamplemousse" really was the big giveaway

Natalie: "Are you finished with your coffee cup Stephen?"
Stephen: "Yes Natalie darling I am, although it's not a coffee cup, it's a teacup..."

*5 minute debate later*

Result: The contents of the cup do not determine the name of the cup. The cup is a cup/mug whether it contains tea/coffee/ribena/hot chocolate or any other beverage.

When it was noted that an episode was going to be done on france I was a little annoyed as me and a friend cowrote and filmed an episode in french which we called quasi interesant (lit. almost interesting) as quite does not translate to any words begining with Q and we wished to keep it as QI if you search quasi interesant on youtube it can be viewed - it is half an hour long so be warned.
Enjoy

Hello - this is my first ever post, so be gentle with me.

I am hoping this is the right place, in the French Episode a couple of weeks ago, it was mentioned that 80% of what we call the French nowadays didn't speak or understand French in 1890 (...according to some census)

I am quite willing to believe that, but I have a French friend who WILL NOT, so I wonder if anyone could point me to a reliable reference for this fact? (or otherwise?)

I know this is a couple of weeks ago, but I only just found this marvellous corner of the interweb, and a very fine corner it is too.

Best
Jim

Well I live here and I can tell you that in the deep country, we still don't speak "normal" French. In my village we still have a lot of the old linguistic habits that make city-dwellers fall about.

I will have a look and see if I can find a French site that confirms this fact because being Gallic, you friend won't believe a word written in English ... we're a bit like that, you know.

Try this. It is a section on how the Revolution tried to unify the French language from the collection of patois that were used up til then.

The next section on in the site goes on to outline how universal education sought to eliminate the patois languages (the ones we are trying to revive now!) and she might find that of interest.
