In the late 80s or early 90s there was a hilarious radio show called "Saturday Night Fry" which I believe ran for only six episodes and was hosted by Stephen. I only have one of the shows on audio-tape recorded, shamefully, from the BBC radio4 channel. I have listened to it again and again- wishing that I had the rest. Does anyone remember the show? Is it going to be released on CD?

The episode I have is the penultimate or last of the series. It involved Stephen doing a Snuff movie review in the style of Barry Norman, and Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson et al going to Hades as Stephen was "doing his level best to get someone's father back from the Underword."

Oh! How I loved that show!!!!

:-// I am new to this forum and that fact together with my lazyness unfortunately means that I am unsure of whether this topic has already been raised.

I have now found the thread concerning the MP3s of Saturday Night Fry, tucked away on page 6 of the Film, TV, radio & theatre forum. Apologies. But if anyone hasn't heard them already then check them out. :-//

I feel more shame listening to the MP3s than I did recording it off the radio but "I'm in heaven!"

I have them as MP3s. Let me see what I can do for you.

Wonderful radio show from a bygone age... I listen to them quite a lot, and have much of it memorized, but it NEVER gets old!

I wish someone would come up with a show of this quality without it being NPR's Prairie Home Companion (which just. isn't. funny.)

EDIT: Oops, didn't read that you already found the MP3s. WOohoo!

wow! I have no time to listen to these right but I have a distinct feeling that when I get the chance it will be quite a treat. I feel like I've added little gems to my hard drive.

and I sure don't feel guilty; I've paid my Fry price for a while to get that *luxurious* t-shirt.

It's going to be released on June 4:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saturday-Night-Fry/dp/1408.....amp;sr=8-3

"Product Description
Available for the first time on CD, this six-part comedy series was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1988. Hosted by Stephen Fry, accompanied each week by Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Emma Thompson and a selection of guests including Phyllida Law, Robert Bathurst, Julia Hills and Alison Steadman, the show takes the form of a round table discussion, interspersed with sketches which veer tangentially from the sublime to the ridiculous."

Thanks everybody! I have downloaded the MP3s but I am also going to get the CDs. I feel it is my duty to do so as I hassled my local BBC shop for years about these CDs. If there are people out there who haven't heard it before or recently the "Saturday Night Fry" show is a timeless gem. Now I have to go and see if I can get the old "Braindrain" comedy TV show starring Tony Hawks, Jimmy Mulville and Jo Brand released onto DVD...

I just received the CD box set of Saturday Night Fry. I thought I'd let people know that it is now available.

Ooooh, very cool! If I didn't already have the series on my own CDs, and had spare change, I'd totally get that (again).

On another random note, Phill Jupitus messaged me on Twitter because of a random SNF tweet I made. He's a big fan of the series too

Aaah, Saturday Night Fry. I remember discovering this early in high school and getting quite evangelical about the programme - burning off air recordings for friends, etc. I remember a few occasions sharing a set of headphones with a fellow student so we could both listen on our way to an excursion or the bus home from school.

Part of me wishes the series had enjoyed a longer lifespan - Fry, Laurie, Broadbent, Thompson, etc. - that's a sketch ensemble that could rival Python. The other part of me just relishes the incredible quality that was able to be maintained across the entire series. It came out of the box fully formed and was brilliant for the whole run. It also turned me on to Louis Jordan, which I'm eternally grateful for.

I absolutely adore Saturday Night Fry, so much that I could hug it and smush it to bits. This is one of my favourite sketch shows. I even prefer this to A Bit of Fry and Laurie (which I like a lot). I've listened to it so many times and the length of each episode is perfect for my commute on the train. It's pretty perfect as a series and did not go on for subsequent series risking a decline. Everything and everyone just worked in it. Lovely.

I'm currently working my way through the other Saturday Night Fry, the panel/discussion show one from the 90s which I'm finding interesting.

Assuming direct control...
