The Dinner Party
The joint is out of time. It should be done
by now. Too late. The gravy on the plates
congealed a while ago and now the fates
conspire to spoil the dinner and my fun.
Instead of beef and mustard, guests will eat
a pie of woodlice, beetle dung and nits
as that is all I’ve got, apart from bits
of raw meat dripping down onto my feet.
I hear a car horn. Help! My guests are here!
Could always fry the goldfish. No, I can’t.
Or bluff it out? Be brazen? No, I shan’t.
I’d best escape now, while the coast is clear.
The puzzled guests have gone at last – let’s see:
McD or Colonel’s chicken for my tea?

Thank you! (Would've replied sooner, but I've been away.)
Here's another daft little poem. I write sensibly occasionally, but not today.
which way to turn
he lived in a circular house –
it solved the problem
of never knowing which way to turn.
around the house he planted lobelia
purple and white and poisonous
and when he died
he left a note, a candle, a rose,
a puppet, a block of stale cheddar
(which might have been soap)
and a map of how to get out

Enjoyed both your poems, delph_ambi. Please continue writing daft ones. Being sensible is very overrated, I enjoy laughing much more.

I think writing sensibly is over-rated...I enjoyed you two poems!
The system grinds on
malodorous, relentless
producing manure
(Sudo Kamikaze 1780 - 1835)

Thanks all! Here's another nutty sonnet.
Shell shocked
The incubator's light turned green. We cheered!
The wait was over, eggs would hatch tonight,
but as we watched it flickered fast. We feared
the hatchlings wouldn't last, would die of fright.
"Not so!" Professor Zog cried, full of glee,
"Their life force cannot fail, I promise you."
And he was right. Now all of us could see
a tiny movement; peck, peck, peck, and through
the mottled shell a beak appeared. A beak?
But dragons don't have beaks. We were perplexed.
This looked more like a chicken. Zog looked bleak.
"Good grief!" he wailed. "I say! Whatever next!"
And thus it was, despite a heartfelt plea,
Professor Zog now works for KFC.

Thank you! I mostly write free verse, but enjoy writing sonnets, sestinas, etc.
