Trefusis deliberately misquotes Confusious:

A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step, not the purchase of a ticket?

And where it may be and probably is just a Trefusism, something about the quote makes me inspect everything I'm being told in great detail and not let anything pass unnoticed.

I only dare look at these posts when I'm sure of my information and nothing can be spoiled. After the study for episode 2 I do have a fresh appreciation for learning, especially for landscape painting of the 17th and 18th Centuries. I am really enjoying the quest on which I'm being propelled, and feel it a real challenge to absorb every tidbit of wisdom it offers.

For me the prize is most definitely in the journey.

yes, I agree that the journey is the prize. I agree so strongly that I'm tempted to go on about it in a Trefusian manner...wl;erhewtoihewoithe...there's the fast-forward.

onward then...
I noticed the misquote, but I didn't think it was particularly important. in light of your conclusion regarding episode 2, do you think it was? (or episode 3, if you've listened to that one.)
I really just thought it was Trefusis modernizing to be kinda goofy. a little bit make fun of how easy our travel is these days...maybe even how easily information travels these days.

I may very well be clutching at straws and reading too much into an offhand throw away musing, but what I think is that the clues are in the detail: It was through the mention of hops and elms that put me on the track of a Dutch master for painting 1, and the myriad of small detail that built the picture and the connection with the second painting. It has been these little asides that have required me to research and not fill in the blanks with what I already know.

"Believe everything and assume nothing" - I think we need to consider everything and be prepared to study all we are told.

It is the confucious misquote and the mention of the Spanish pointer that I think I will be going back too at the weekend to satisfy my curiosity. I don't think I can discount the painting or put it aside as Episode 2 is 'solved?'. I think our new appreciation for Hobbema should be lasting.
Actually with reference to Hobbema, Trefusis's slight preadmonishment to Stephen's appreciation of said painting not only gave a nice counterpoint to Scott's withering appraisal of it but also to our own appeciation of 'Art'. In one account I found - Hobbema died in poverty and his paintings just 20 or 30 years ago would have been sold for £20-£30. I will hold a genuine and many leveled appreciation for painting 1 and what it has taught me and the lessons it continues to impart, in other words "I will look and continue to just look".

those details are useful for searching, but I don't think they were essential-- I didn't know I was looking for a Dutch painter, but I still found the identity of the first painting. I think the point of the puzzle aspect of episode 2 was to connect the paintings, and there's nothing more to it, but that is just my personal hunch, nothing I should be forcing on others. (there's also the art/history appreciation "point" of the exercise, but that's a whole separate post.)

even if further investigation didn't turn up anything really significant, the exploration would be fun. and it would be really neat if you did find there's something to it!
