Hiya peoples
About 20 years ago, I started writing down my musings about my mental health. Today, those scribbles became a book published by Chipmunka Publishing, the mental health publishers. It is the story of 57 years of living with what we politely now term Bi-Polar Disorder, but when it was troubling me it was known as Manic Depression and therefore not to be spoken out loud for fear of mockery and worse.
I've been living in a sort of self-inflicted emotional exile for many years. Through the very lovely Stephen Fry and his televison programmes, which led to my completing the book, I've re-emerged, so to speak. As of today, I'm back amongst the living and I don't give a flying fig what anybody thinks. I'm Tony, and I'm Bi-Polar. How are you doing?
My book is written under a pseudonym, David Thomas, that was my younger brother's name. If you read the book, you'll understand why.
If you wish to read the e-book version, it is available as a download for just £5 from http://chipmunkapublishing.co.uk/shop/index.php?ma.....ts_id=1561.
The paperback will follow later.
If you do read it, please tell me what you think, either which way, I won't fall down in a big heap if it's negative.
My non-mental (a matter of opinion) other thoughts can be read here: http://www.baythemoon.com
Love 'n' stuff

As a direct result of maintaining a proper two-year treatment plan for what was bipolar disorder but is now classed as Cyclothymia, I have finally managed to edit out the errors, and made several other important changes, to my autobiography, Unsettling. By far the most important change I have made is that I've decided to stop living in fear of ridicule and so to 'come out' and release my real name. Hi, my name is not David Thomas, that was my pen name, my real name is Tony Lockhart and I'm back amongst the living.

Thank you Nitro.
Since Chipmunka took the book on, I've spent a lot of time talking to myself about the value of this writing business. I’m left wondering if it’s all worth it? If you are on the wrong side of not great mental health, then certainly from the cathartic viewpoint, getting your thoughts down on paper can be tremendously valuable. Personally I did lay a lot of ghosts to rest, which was great for me, but it’s not for everyone. You have to be strong enough to stand back from what inevitably spews out when you open the small crack that is the first sentence. On the one hand it beats sitting down and emptying one’s head and pockets with a shrink. On the other hand, the writing can bring out a lot of stuff you might have thought was buried deep enough to keep it hidden, and that in itself can lead someone to seek the help of a ‘professional’ once again. All in all, I’m glad I did it. It also enabled me to declare myself to my friends, most of whom had no idea about my condition, but now they do know, my past all makes sense to them.
If I’m honest I don't think the book will sell well at all. At least it won’t if it’s sold as a book by and about a bipolar person. The subject matter is too much for most people. Although I tried to write it in such a way that it is a long way from being depressing. Certainly there are one or two chapters that would never get read out at a child’s birthday party, but we could say that of just about any of us, be they healthy, bipolar, MD or anything else. I’d love for it to stand alone as it where. I’m not suggesting it’s some great piece of literature, it isn’t, but then neither is a lot of the stuff we see in print today.
My plan, nay hope, is to have a go at adapting the book into a television screenplay. I think the style lends itself to a series. I did something similar many years ago, and the then head of drama at Channel 4 told me why it was pants! I’ve read a couple of books since then, perhaps this time I can give it a better go. It’s a long hope I know, but it might work. Besides, I have little else to do for the next five years except pretend to play at being an office boy. Every working day and week is the same, without any diversion to look forward to. I’ve exhausted Half-Life (the ‘puter game) so it seems to me not at all a bad idea to try to recreate what retrospectively seems a fantasy world that I occupied for so many years. It’ll give me someplace to step into at evenings and weekends.

Congrats on the publishing Dave!
I think it's tricky making a book into a film but maybe think about doing a script-writing course they really do help. Also the book "Story" by Robert Mckee - it's very good, you might have come across it if you have done some script writing before. In relation to that I would also recommend watching adaptation a film written by Charlie Kaufman.
Good luck!

Shamelessly regurgitating an old post in an attempt to garner interest in my book. Available from Amazon - http://tinyurl.com/22m6vc2 or Chipmunka Publishing - http://tinyurl.com/39pct9z

Don't get mad at me but.....ha ha...
I'm going to call 'bullshit' on you as I'm feeling blunt and know you're too smart to be put off by my directness. But this question is one I think you perfectly know well the answer to:
"I’m left wondering if it’s all worth it?"
I believe you believe that Yes, it absolutely is worth it. Else, why continue 'shamelessly' garnering interest for it? Also, you have a website of other writings that you promote and you wish to get this done for TV. Which is fantastic Bay, but for pete's sake any suggestion on your part that you might not really be liking or finding worth in this is making my hair curl Which makes me look very silly, thanks.
I have started to read some of the free chapters you've offered. As a reader, I'd rather know the writer thought it 'worth it' than to suggest he's wasted both our time Does that make sense?

I'm not at all put off by your directness. In fact, I welcome it. Your comments do make sense and you don't look silly.
My comments about whether or not it was worth it refer to the high anxiety I experienced while writing it (bear in mind my earlier post in this thread was written long before the book came out). My moods changed rapidly and I felt I would never finish it, which made my emotions go into overdrive. Now that it is done, and in print, I'm very glad I did. Yes, it could be improved by better editing (true of many books) but I couldn't afford the cost of that and don't know anyone well enough to do it for me.
I have had some feedback and it has been very complimentary, but then again one never knows if people are just being kind. I know it is not perfect, but I wanted it to be and that's really my point. There I go again (self- confidence has never been my strong point). I know that it is not at all a bad book, those that have read it tell me it is quite unique in style and structure, which is good to hear because that was my intention.
As for the TV version, incredibly talented screenwriters like Jimmy McGovern don't half make it difficult for anyone else, so I've abandoned that idea. Instead I'm going to try to get someone like him to read the book and perhaps be inspired to write the screenplay. We live in hope.
Regards
David
P.S. I'll buy you some hair straighteners for Christmas to get rid of those unwanted curls!

I'm a knucklehead. I should've noticed the dates of your postings Bay. But thanks for clarifying and even more, not feeling the need to be defensive. That's a huge relief, thank you.
Sounds like you have a pretty healthy attitude about your book. It is your first after all and hey, you're officially PUBLISHED. It doesn't guarantee future rewards, but it's a really big step for any writer and you should be deservedly proud of having achieved that. I hope in having done so, you will consider doing it again. You thought enough and worked hard enough to get published and when you're done enjoying that accomplishment, maybe you can work just as hard towards a next step ( such as the screenplay idea ).
Don't know if these further statements will help, but a friend of mine makes a living, and only a living, as a writer. He's published well over 30 books and also teaches writing as a side gig. The business of writing is very complex and because of sites like Amazon and just the whole evolution of technological means, the publishing business is going through very painful changes and, unfortunately, writers get stampeded by it. My prediction is one I share with my writer friend: that all future content will share the same model as Netflix. You pay one subscription fee and get everything - music, movies, books, news etc etc - on demand, instantly. I think what that will mean for writers is figuring out the marketing process in all of it, and it will take massive amounts of it to rise above and stand out from the MILLIONS of aspiring writers, poets, journalists, essayists, et al.
So maybe consider some of that as you go about your endeavors, but don't let it stop you from doing a damned thing. Just figure out the 'game' best you can and win using the rules that exist.
