Government wants new powers to block wikileaks and squeeze web tv
Just over a week ago I wrote a fairly dry legal analysis of the Digital Economy Bill. I spotted an extremely serious provision โ clause 11 โ in the version being discussed in the House of Lords. Having looked at the amendments (which you can find on the Bill's document page) I am worried that no-one in Parliament appears to be taking the problem serious.
What is the problem with clause 11 that I am getting so alarmed about it? It amends the Communications Act 2003 to insert a new section 124H which would, if passed, give sweeping powers to the Secretary of State. It begins:
(1) The Secretary of State may at any time by order impose a technical obligation on internet service providers if the Secretary of State considers it appropriate in view ofโ
Pausing there. Note that this says nothing at all about copyright infringement. For example the power could be used to:
* order ISP's to block any web page found on the Internet Watch Foundation's list
* block specific undesireable sites (such as wikileaks)
* block specific kinds of traffic or protocols, such as any form of peer-to-peer
* throttle the bandwidth for particular kinds of serivce or to or from particular websites.
In short, pretty much anything.

The government there is trying to do more privacy invasions even than what you have mentioned. Look up what they want to do with DNA information for instance. I'm very surprised, also, that the folks there passively watched as cameras were placed all over the cities and such. For what?!!
The citizenry everywhere needs to do what Jim Morrison once screamed:
WAKE UP!!!!!

There was a program on BBC Saturday 6th Feb 2010 evening called: The Virtual Revolution - Enemy of the State? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00qsbvv/The_.....the_State/
It talks about the censorship in Iran and demonstrates a program that bypassed the blockades. The program is called: haystack http://www.haystacknetwork.com/
It's more important for us as a people to create a true democracy and have a say in how our country is run. We should actively discuss political actions across the internet. Give people who can make truly informed decisions the ability to make them.
So how can we the people add and amend The England's Bill of Rights? eg "giving people complete uncensored access to the internet"
As technology evolves so should the rules that govern it and they way it is governed. Create the obvious newly evolved public rights before they can take them away.
What it seems a lot of people forget is to actively get involved and fix things for yourself. If you don't have the tools to do it, learn them. You have the entire internet (as of today) to research and make a valued point. If it's right people will want want to follow. If the only thing you can think of is creating a Facebook group then do it, but positive action is required!
How can we use social networking model to put across strong political views? I would want to join a political social networking site promoting freedom of speech and the freedom to listen if it had power behind it. Just as wikileaks can't be passed off as tosh because it has merit.
