Can someone please give me an idea what to expect, when you see a Psychiatrist for the first time.
My doctor has referred me, and I may have a long wait, but I would like a rough idea what to expect.
I am worried I may not like them (even though I have never met them?), and find it very difficult to talk about things
( my husband doesn't know loads of things about my past, and how I feel now, it is all in my head)
Thanks for any replies .
Caz

Hello and welcome Caz ,

The visit should be quite relaxing and cathartic actually. I have had to see 5 'new' psychiatrists this last 32 years and they all knew how to structure the interview in a friendly but focused way. I found that they always seemed to know the right questions to ask, and/or guide my own thoughts in the direction of greater clarity if I rambled on a bit.

Just expect a friendly person to ask loads of questions and then give you a chance to ask any questions you may have.

The first consultation usually lasts about 30 -60 minutes and subsequent ones about 15 - 20 minutes.Remember that this will probably be the first of a few consultations with them, so do not feel that you have to say everything perfectly accurate first time. I see mine every 1-3 months and he knows when I am well enough to lead the conversation - or if I am too low or high and need him to take over.

I appreciate that there may be other forum members with different experiences, but I found the process very re-assuring ( and still do ).

All the best for your first consultation ! - If you need any further chatter about it all, feel free to give me a nudge

Derek.

Everything above sounds much like my experiences.

The psychiatrist will be trying to get a picture of what you feel are the difficulties you are facing, how they affect your life, and what the reasons are that cause your experiences.

S/he is there to understand your mental health situation rather than to make any judgement about you as an individual.

You don't have to prove anything, or do things 'the right way'. Just be yourself as you are on that day.

The psychiatrist wants you to become more able to fulfill your natyral potential.

Take care

Chris

When you say three at one time, where they all working together or did they even know about each other?
you know you are only meant to see one professional at a time unless they are working together in a particular way. For example, you may be seeing a GP, a specialist and a counsellor at one time which is ok, but you shouldnt be seeing 2 GP's or 2 counsellors at the same time, esp if they dont know about the other one.

There was one i had seen at the local hospital and two others who i couldn't really understand but who seemed to not know what medication to give. When they asked me something the answer i tried to give was with some background but didn't want to know about that.
And one kept talking over me and given i had taken the afternoon off work for a 2pm appointment and didn't get seen untill 2.45pm i wasn't in the best of moods.

I think it is disgusting the way people with mental problems are treated there seems to be a lot off wrong diagnosis regarding it i would prefer to talk to someone who has experienced the problem rather someone who has read about it the line " i know what it must feel like " is just so stupid you know well have you had it no so you don't know what it's like then. But anyway i'm sure people come across decent therapists

No 3 together in the same room one was ok quite understanding the other 2 were a waste of time it was all yes we want to help oh poor you and all that 6 months later er where is the help.
It's a joke then when they let people into the community and they go out of control the people who let them out should be sacked.
Gp's are no better the one here gave me every drug under the sun before admitting defeat so i was left feeling crap while she played god that's the trouble with this country too many people on too much money doing nothing to earn it.

Sorry to read that you have had some bad experiences JV.

My own sound physically similar, but differently perceived.

1) I always allow a second or third psychiatrist/ trainee psychiatrist/Nurse in the room to assist with the task of providing myself as a 'sample' for them to study in order to help provide ongoing experience and education within the local Health Trust..

(The first person to spot my real diagnosis was in fact a 'junior' member of the Psychiatric team ).

2) I have also tried many drugs over 32 years and continue to experiment. Some of us unfortunately take a long time to find the right combination
( I'm still trying ) - and some of us are not helped by medication to the degree we would like, if indeed at all.

I therefore do not blame the prescribing G.P or Psychiatrist for the fact that a given drug(s) is/are not working at any given time, as I realise that we all react so differently to the same thing. or combination of things.
They ( or I ) don't know that drugs x,y and z are not appropriate unless we first try them. I have friends who have found great relief from things I cannot even bear to take !

I am honest and yet friendly about what I perceive to be their own limitations and they in turn concur, but continue to constantly bring about what change they can.

Perhaps I have indeed been fortunate, but perhaps I just take to them a more compliant and malleable material to work on ...

All the best for your future treatment , and health J.V.

Derek.

The proposed Mental Health Bill is far more complex issue than locking up people with my diagnosis. As someone with a personality disorder i have no fear of the proposed legislation.
