Of course the invention of the press is very important, but all the while the press itself is an unique, hand-made machine then it's potential is limited. Surely the real revolution begins once the press can be mass-produced in the way the press enabled the mass production of identical copies of printed material?
I would be interested to know who was responsible for 'finishing the job' as it were, especially as Stephen Fry tells us that the original press had to be given up by Gutenberg himself to pay off debts.
