When I was first diagnosed, I was given just Seroquel. Then after the lovely suicidal trip to the hospital, they added Lamictal, Cymbalta, and Klonopin. Seroquel blew me up like the circus fat man, so I was switched to Geodon -- evil, evil Geodon. I fell asleep and out of my chair while singing with a first grade class! I am now on Lithium, Effexor, Synthroid (lithium killed my thyroid), and Ambien for sleep. It seems to work, though I am going through a "meds have ruined my life" phase. I'm terrified to go off them though. I've seen what I do when I'm off them. I'm slightly mixed, hypo right now, and I am enjoying it while it lasts.

Geodon is more commonly knon of as ziprasidone in th UK. All my drugs keep blowing me up but the drs don't seem to care.

I try to look on the bright side....My knee bones have enough padding they they don't rub each other, and My bra has gone up to a 38 C - wowza! Oh, and that old cheesy rap hit "Baby Got Back" has a whole new meaning.

I took seroquel first of all and put on 3 stone so they took me off it and put me on Aripiprazole (Abilify)which has been doing me really well. But I was told when I went onto it that they would want to take me off meds after a couple of years. I've just started to get my life back together and started to feel normal for the first time in my life. Do I have to come off the meds?

No you don't. You can stay on them for at least a while until you have been stable for a while... or you can tell your drs that you want to stay on the aripiprizole for prophylaxis indefinitely, i.e. to prevent the return of your illness. (I am on aripiprizole, seroquel/quetiapine and topiramate for prophylaxis indefinitely).

I wish my dr had been so good as to take me off olanzapine (zyprexa) and mirtazapine (remeron) when I gained way more than 3 stone...

Am on meds until sept this year at least - and that'll be two years....
I know from bitter experience that the 'i feel better now, so i'll stop taking my meds' is a BAD idea.... In 2002/3 i was on meds, then stopped cos i thought i was better, and then crashed big time in 2003.
Not good.
Docs generally like to keep you on meds until they're sure you're stable - like Ks said.

Mmm yes, and it depends how many episodes you've had. If it's only 1 or 2 then they will try you without meds, if it's 100's like me they wont. If I come off my meds for a few days I get ill again.

Thanks katysara and greentree, I feel much better now. I've been worrying about it too much I think. I've had more than a few episodes but not severe ie no hospitalisation or anything though they feel pretty severe at the time. I'm a bit low at the moment but I know on the tablets that I can manage it and fight it with diet and exercise, keeping in touch with friends that kind of thing. If I can just get a job now then my life will be almost complete

I guess it's a case-by-case thing. As Ks said, it depends on number of episodes etc. Some people won't be able to come off meds ever, some can after a while. Prob down to you and your gp/psych. And either way, i guess it needs careful watching.
You sound pretty sensible in managing yourself, ruthy- diet/exercise/friends...good luck!
